Vorspan Says 'Moral Majority'
Threat to All, Not Just Jews

By DORIS SKY

(Intermountain Jewish News)

Moral Majority, the bur-
geoning evangelical phe-
nomenon entering the polit-
ical arena, presents one of
the most tremendous
threats the American
society has ever faced.
The Jewish community
by its withdrawal from to-
day's social agenda on such
issues as abortion, race re-
lations, interfaith activities
and civil liberties has
helped to create a terrible
vacuum which is being fil-
led by fanatics.
Expressing those beliefs
is Albert Vorspan, vice
president of the Union of
American Hebrew Congre-
gations.
Dr. Vorspan said he is
frightened because the
Moral Majority is actu-
ally only a year old. In
that time they have
"taken over" both politi-
cal parties in some states.
He cites the recent elec-
tion in Alaska as an
example.

What is at stake is a
"fight for the soul of
America." The Moral
Majority has stolen the field
when it comes to looking at
congressional candidates,
claims Vorspan. They have
dislodged us completely,
and by 'us' I don't mean just
Jews, I mean the liberal co-
alitions of yesteryear," he
says.
While the Moral Majority
may pose a menace for Jews,
it is not the Jews alone who
can halt it. The only way is
for Jews and "sane, moder-
ate" Christians to work to-

gether. The two groups
working together over the
years shaped America.
"Now," says Vorspan, "they
are shaping America."
Asked if part of today's
circumstances may have
been created by the aliena-
tion of some Christians over
the continual problems of
Israel and the Mideast, Vor-
span was quick to admit this
is true.
Israel's stance alone
has not contributed to
this, but rather the man-
ner in which her stance is
interpreted.
"Mdre serious is the way
we as American Jews be-
have, in which we suggest to
the Christian community
that the only thing that
really counts is Israel. We
don't express enough con-
cern over what is happening
in our cities . . . in our
economy . . . in our com-
munity issues. Also, if they
look at Israel in a somewhat
different manner than we
do, we seem as if we are
going to put them on a list."
Of major seriousness is
the power of Zbigniew
Brzezinski, whom Vorspan
considers a serious threat to
the Jewish community, cal-
ling him the architect and
spokesman for the Mideast
policies in which Israel be-
comes almost secondary and
irrelevant.
There again, Jews are
looking at politics with a
short-term, narrow view.
We are so intent on watch-
ing the Presidential elec-
tion that we overlook the
senatorial and congres-
sional candidates — the
people who will be in power

Grants Aid Yeshiva U. Work

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Two members of the
Yeshiva University faculty
— Dr. Arthur Hyman and
Dr. Moshe Sokolow — have
received fellowships from
the Memorial Foundation
for Jewish Culture for
scholarly projects exploring
Jewish culture and history.
Hyman, philosophy pro-
fessor, will write on
Maimonides, and Sokolow,
a Bible professor, will study
Rashi's commentary on the
Book of Job.
Dr. Israel Miller, the uni-
versity's senior vice
president, announced the
university's Bernard Revel

Graduate School of Ad-
vanced Jewish Studies was
also getting a grant from
the Memorial Foundation
and the National Endow-
ment for the Humanities to
study "Syntactic Ambiguity
in Jewish Exegesis of the
Bible."

for more than the next four
years.
But these are the very
people the Moral Major-
ity are targeting — men
such as McGovern, Bayh,
Cranston and Javits. The
power of America lies in
the grass roots, not just in
the Oval Office. The
growth and strength of
such groups as the Moral
Majority is in almost in-
verse proportion to the
withdrawal of Jews and
like-minded people from
the political arena: as we
backed off, they ad-
vanced.
If we are to face this tre-
mendous threat to our
American society, Vorspan
is blunt: "It's time for the
Jewish community to get off
its bottom!"

KKK Bounced
from Office 9
TV Show

2 9 3 0 0 TELEGRAPH

TORONTO (JTA) — Ale-
xander McQuirter, the 22-
year-old self-styled "na-
tional director" of the Ku
Klux Klan, was bounced
from a television talk show
in northern Ontario and has
been evicted from his office
in Toronto.
McQuirter confirmed
that the KKK received an
eviction notice Oct. 1 order-
ing it to vacate its office on
upper Yonge St. by Nov. 1.
He said the owners of the
building, K & C Construc-
tion Co., accused the KKK
of misrepresentation when
it signed a two-year lease in
September under the name
of "National Association for
the Advancement of White
People" and charged that its
presence was "causing other
tenants mental anguish."
Another Klan spokes-
man said, "A Jew owns
this building and I guess
he hates us." McQuirter
said the Klan has moved
out but would fight the
eviction in court.
He was dropped from a
segment of a weekly phone-
in television show broadcast
by CICI-TV after a 36-hour
protest campaign initiated
by the small Jewish com-
munity of Sudbury, Ont.
and the District Labor
Council.
