Arab, Jewish Protests
Palestinian pickets and
Jewish activists were pre-
sent during Israel Prime
Minister Menahem Begin's
visit yesterday to the Coun-
cil of Jewish Federation's
General Assembly at the
Detroit Plaza Hotel.
Arab pickets sponsored
by the Palestinian Congress
of North America picketed
outside of the hotel Thurs-
day. Although Detroit is re-
ported to have the largest
Arabic-speaking commu-
nity in the U.S. — 200,000
persons including 25,000-
35,000 Palestinians — a
spokesman said the demon-
strators came from as far
away as Chicago.
Meanwhile, the North
American Jewish Students'
Network fasted on Thurs-
day as a measure of solidar-
ity with the Ethiopian
Jewish community. The fast
protested "the continued si-
lence of world Jewry in the
face of the anihilation of the
Ethiopian Jewish commu-
nity."
On Oct. 8, the Detroit
Zionist Federation
adopted a resolution urg-
ing the CJF to support all
efforts to aid Ethiopian
Jewry in making aliya
and that a General As
sembly plenary session
be used to discuss the is-
sue.
The DZF also urged that
aliya from all countries be a
priority item for all Jewish
federations.
