Calendar Aids
Study of Torah
NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of
America's national Limud
Torah Commission has an-
nounced the publication of
the pilot edition of the
Luach Limud Torah Diary,
self-education study tool
combining a practical busi-
ness calendar diary and a
Luach-Calendar.
The Torah Diary is a
pocket-size, 100-page,
magazine-type booklet
which will be published
monthly, beginning
January 1981.
The pilot edition, for Sep-
tember 1980, is being dis-
tributed to over 5,000 com-
munal leaders, rabbis and
educators.
The top section contains
the calendar diary which, in
addition to calendar infor-
mation, provides sufficient
space for noting daily ap-
pointments and events.
The lower section con-
tains daily Torah study
materials in Mishna and
Halakha. Each Mishna is
printed in voweled Hebrew,
accompanied by a clear
translation and a commen-
tary.

Criticism Study
A second edition of
-"Methods of Rhetorical
Criticism" by Bernard L.
Brock and Robert L. Scott
has been issued by Wayne
State University Press.
The book, originally pub-
lished in 1972, enables the
reader to come to some
understanding of the efforts
of rhetorical discourse: The
volume details efforts in the
various media of communi-
cation and such academic
departments as English,
political science, sociology
and history to describe and
evaluate the flow of public
address.
The authors believe that
the use and diversity of
criticism has resulted in
such a proliferation of terms
and methods that the field
of rhetorical criticism ap-
pears chaotic to the novice.
Brock is a professor of
speech-communication at
WSU and Scott is a profes-
sor and chairman of the
speech department at the
University of Minnesota.
Respite for Israel
NEW YORK (ZINS) —
The New York Times
editorialized that the war
between Iran and Iraq had
been a blow to the Palesti-
nians. It has divided the
Arab world, given Israel a
respite by moving the
Israel-Palestinian issue
from center stage, and
drawn the U.S. and Soviet
Union deeper into the
region, the paper said.
Defensive Drain
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The Bank of Israel reported
that Israel spent $14.3 bil-
lion to import arms during
the 1970s. Since 1974, im-
ports for defense have aver-
aged 15 percent of the coun-
try's grost national product.
