Greetings!
As a past president of the
Council and as chairman of
United Israel Appeal, the
importance of the General
Assembly in determining
the goals of American
Jewry during the coming
year becomes ever more ap-
rent to me. In recent
_ deks, we have witnessed a
shocking outbreak of anti-
Semitism in France. The
number of Jews leaving the
Soviet Union has been dras-
tically reduced. Meanwhile
the Jewish communities in
Iran, Turkey and Ethiopia
have come under attack and
look to Israel as a haven.

In 1946, the.Detroit Ar-
rangements Committee was
chaired by Mrs. Sidney J.
Allen. In 1960, the general
chairmen were Judge Theo-
dore Levin and Mrs. Henry
Wineman. Mrs. Norman
Rosenfeld is chairman ofthe
Planning Committee in
1980.
In the 1946 Assembly,
Isidore Sobeloff, Jewish
Welfare Federation execu-
tive director, made a major
report. Other Detroiters on
the program were Rabbi
Leon Fram, Judge William
Friedman and Rabbi B. Be-
nedict Glazer.
In 1960, the Assembly
program included De-
