THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, November 1, 1980 1 Critical Juncture for Jewry By GEORGE M. ZELTZER President, Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit a few days, the strength and creativity of the Jewish communities of North America will be brought to bear on the major issues of our time. The 49th General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federa- tions comes to Detroit at a critical juncture for world Jewry. Embarking upon the de- cade of the 1980s, we in De- troit look to our colleagues a sharing of experiences ideas that will be of mutual benefit. The Gen- eral Assembly always has contributed much to our community's ability to con- front challenge and adapt to changing needs. Among those challenges are the problems of an aging population, increased mo- GEORGE ZELTZER bility and the consequences of dwindling communities, the need for cultural and educational opportunities to enhance the quality of Jewish life and many other issues. At the same time, we look with dismay upon an increasingly sophisti- cated public relations ef- fort by Israel's foes, even while terrorism against her people and against Jewish institutions around the world is mounting. All of these are on our collective agenda for action. Detroit takes great pride in hosting the 49th GA. It gives us the opportunity to show why this community is special and why Renais- sance City hospitality has become nationally — even internationally — known. On behalf of the Jewish Welfare Federation, I wel- come the General Assembly delegates and their families. I hope that our ses- sions will be fruitful and that in our sharing we will find new strength for the decade ahead. Best Wishes for Continued Success Hostess Welcomes Delegates By DULCIE ROSENFELD Chairman, Detroit Host Committee As a longtime Detroit booster, I take special de- light in chairing the host committee for the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations. This event gives our Jewish community an opportunity to demonstrate why we are so special, for just as hundreds of volun- teers channel their philan- lhropy and activity into making our organizations work, hundreds of volun- teers have contributed their talents and time to making our GA delegates feel wel- come. The impressive agenda of plenary and workshop ses- sions will provide much food for thought. At the same time, no effort has been spared to provide' oppor- tunities to nourish the spirit. On this great occasion, I am proud to share Detroit with our sister communities and to wish the GA dele- gates a warm shalom!
