JOAN WITTENBERG owner of Healthy Jones on Northwestern, writes .. . `What is health? To me it is being sexy, looking bright and beautiful, full of energy, strength to do the things you want to do and the frame of mind to be able to do it and do it well. "At one time it seemed that eating natural foods, taking vitamins and getting involved in holistic life style was strictly for the flower children or hippie culture. Now, we are finding it's ap- pealing to everyone from all walks of life — and why? — because it really works. It's not just one thing that does it, it's the combination of eating right, exercising, vitamins and taking good care of the most important person in the woitld, you. "We go in for all kinds of creams and magic potions for our skin, but good health comes from within. There is nothing wrong with getting the eyes fixed or your face lifted, but unless you feel great from the inside out, you aren't going to come across the way you want. Like anything else, you can't get something for nothing — you have to work hard to get to the bottom line. The bottom line is vit- ality. "I got involved eight or nine years ago. I was feel- ing terrible and found I had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It has many uncomfortable symp- toms and I think I had them all. What a mess I was! I went to doctor after doctor and they said I would have to learn to live with it, gave me a diet that didn't work, some Libs and Vals and sent me to my own private hell. "Well, I am a fighter. I started reading everything I could get my hands on con- cerning hypoglycemia, natural foods, etc. I totally changed my eating habits and felt a great deal better but I still wasn't satisfied with my energy levels. Luc- kily, my husband is a doctor and I was able to talk him into taking me all over the country to seminars on the holistic approach. I met some of the great doctors and nutritionists in this field. "Listening to what they had to say, I started to ex- periment with vitamins. At first I was very discouraged. I didn't feel any different, but slowly it started hap- pening and lo and behold after about three months I felt like a million dollars. "I continued my _ studies through the years and fi- nally opened my own natural food restaurant and health food store (Healthy Jones) because I wanted some place I could enjoy eat- ing and shopping in. When I was sick it would have meant a lot to me to have someone help me under- stand all the new things I was learning."
