Little Book Shop Signifies Renewal of Hatikva

TEL AVIV — The little
bookshop in Tel Aviv's
Hatikva quarter stands out
among the small workshops
and stores which line the
broad street because of its
freshly painted sign and its
well-arranged displays,
brightened by green plants
behind sparkling clean
windows. Because it's so
improbably there — in
Hatikva, Israel's largest
Project Renewal neighbor-
hood — it means so much to
the quarter's residents.
The little bookshop is one
of the first things local citi-
zens asked for when Project
Renewal came to - Hatikva.
It is a tribute to the innova-
tive philosophy of Project
Renewal and to the insight
of the town planners that
the request was not frozen
at once beneath a snowfall
of statistics. The high adult
illiteracy rate and incidence
of teenage drop-outs could
have been devastating
arguments against it.
