HUC Names Two in L.A.

LOS ANGELES — He-
brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion has
announced two appoint-
ments at its Los Angeles
campus.
Dr. Stanley F. Chyet has
been named director of the
School of Rabbinic Studies
and Dr. Norman Mirsky has
been named chairman of the
campus faculty.
Boston-born Dr. Chyet,
a professor of American
Jewish history, is also di-
rector of the Edgar F.

WASHINGTON — Billy
Carter said last week that
he met briefly with George
Habash, leader of the Popu-
lar Front for the Liberation
of Palestine, on one of his
trips to Libya.
Carter's comments were
made in response to an arti-
cle scheduled to appear in
the New Republic that
claims he met with Habash
and also Yasir Arafat, head .
of the Palestine Liberation
Organization. The
President's brother denies
ever meeting Arafat.
Carter said he met
Habash in 1979 while
attending a 10th anniver-
sary celebration of the gov-
ernment of Muammar Qad-
dafi. He said the meeting
was purely social.
The article, written by
Arnaud de Borchgrave, a
former Newsweek writer,
and Michael Ledeen, execu-
tive editor of the Washing-
ton Quarterly, also claims
Carter received $50,000
from Libya that he did not
disclose to the Justice , De-
partment when he regis-
tered as a foreign agent for
Libya in July.

Technion Builds
A Solar Still

HAIFA — An engineer at
the Technion-Israel Insti-
tute of Technology has de-
veloped an apparatus for
distillation of brackish and
saline water that is powered
entirely by solar energy.
"A laboratory-size model
of the apparatus has al-
ready been built, and re-
sults indicate that the next
stage is to build a larger,
practical-sized apparatus
for field testing," according
to Civil Engineering Prof.
Anthony Peranio,
originator of the project.

taught at the college's
Cincinnati school.
Dr. Mirsky is an associate
professor of sociology and
contemporary Jewish
studies. A native of Toledo
and a resident of Cincinnati
for several years, Dr.
Mirsky joined the faculty of
the HUC Cincinnati cam-
pus in 1967, received his
PhD from Brandeis Univer-
sity and subsequently came
to the Western campus.
