Impressive Increases Mark Opening of 1981 AJCampaign Responding to the grow- ing needs for philanthropic assistance to Israel, and to the related causes sup- ported with funds raised by the Allied Jewish Cam- paign, the first gathering in support of the 1981 drive set a new record for giving. Especially significant, as a mark of concern for the pressing needs, was the an- nouncement, made Wed- nesday evening at the tradi- tional "Honigman Event" that last year's contributors of $5,618,8Q0 had raised their gifts to $6,237,000. The same contributors also pledged $5,376,000 to the services rendered in behalf of the neediest in Israel con- ducted as Project Renewal. Wednesday's was the tenth AJCampaign meeting held at the home of Daniel and Susan Holigman. The welcoming remarks by Hon- . igman set the tone for re- sponsiveness, and in every instance the contributions of the less than 60 in attendance was accom- panied by an increase over last year. Yehuda Avner, a member of the advisory staff of Israel Prime Minister Menahem Be- gin, and the Campaign co-chairmen, David Mondry and Marvin Goldman, reviewed cur- rent conditions affecting Israel and world Jeweries in ther em- phasis on the urgent needs in behalf of which the AJCampaign ac- tivists assembled. Mondry commended the sense of responsibility that has created the unity in communal efforts to assure identification without which the hope for defensive efforts for Israel diminishes. Goldman contrasted - the horrors he and associates on a UJA mission witnessed in Auschwitz, after visiting the disappearing Polish Jewish community, with the pride inherent in a re- deemed Israel. He pointed to the Yad Vashem per- petuation of the memories of the Holocaust as a call to action to Jews everywhere never to permit repetition of the barabarities. At the same time, Goldman warned of the danger of repeating anti- Semitism in view of such bigotries being evident not Volume Details Art in Detroit. Public Places Dennis A. Nawrocki's "Art in Detroit Public Places" (Wayne State Uni- versity Press) serves as a guidebook to the many major examples -of public art in Detroit and also as proof that the tradition of art in public places is enjoying a renaissance. The book includes photos and descriptions of some 80 works that are located within a 20 mile radius of Downtown Detroit; it is or- ganized according to five geographical districts: Downtown, Belle Isle and East, Cultural Center, West and North. Represented are such prominent artists as Rodin, Richardson, Calder and Noguchi, along with many local artists. Nawrocki is an instructor in art history at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Center for Creative Studies. He was assisted by Thomas J. Holleman, an archivist with the architectural firm of Johnson, Johnson and Roy. only in Great Britain and in France but also in this coun- try. The Israel emissary, Yehuda Avner, reviewed the conditions affecting Israel, and placed em- phasis on the historic significance of the Israel-Egypt peace ac- cord. While conceding that the Israeli conces- 0 sions to Egypt wer enormous and costly Israel, he maintain ..... that the approach to peace is of incalculable importance that will leave its mark on history. Commenting on the peace treaty with Egypt, Avner said, "The Jerusalem-Cairo axis represents the one strand of stability in the storm of instability around us." He added, "No Jewish state could call itself Jewish if it rejected that hand of peace." Avner also told the Cam- paign contributors that "as a Jew, I know that as we go, you go — as you go, we go." Africans Wary of Arab Threats JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Egypt and the Arab rejec- tionist states are waging a quiet battle in Africa for support for their Middle East policies. The Arab League has warned that it will halt aid to any country that renews ties with Israel. The Arab Bank for African Develop- ment made a similar an- nouncement. Israeli observors believe these threats will hold the poorer African nations in line. Wealthier countries may display more indepen- dence:- However, the Israelis say Egypt is displaying a "pass- ive neutrality" on the issue, while quietly asking the Af- rican states to delay re- ewal of relations with Is- ael until there is progress on the Palestinian issue. - Just come in and I'll show you a wide variety of fabrics, patterns and colors--. -all in big pieces, not small swatches so you can see how beautiful they will look.
