Authority Honors
German Official
Who Aided Jews

JERUSALEM — The late
Dr. Wander Gerhard was
recently memorialized as a
"righteous gentile" at Yad
Vashem, the official Israeli
authority for remember-
ance of the Holocaust.
Dr. Gerhard was a
member of the Wehrmacht
during World War II, but
used his position to issue
certificates stating that the
victims' mothers were not
Jewish so they could es-
cape deportation to the con-
ration camps.
fter he was detected and
transferred back to a unit in
Germany, he deserted and
made his way to Holland
where he joined the under-
ground. He was later caught
and shot to death.

ADL Applauds
SBA Reversal
on Hasidim

NEW YORK — The
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith called the U.S.
Small Business Adminis-
tration's (SBA) recent an-
nouncement that it would
provide assistance to disad-
vantaged members of the
Hasidic community "a step
in the right direction."
Following the April SBA
decision refusing to desig-
nate the Hasidim a "disad-
vantaged" group despite
having found that the evi-
dence of prejudice and dis-
crimination experienced by
the Hasidim was over-
whelming, ADL has pro-
tested to the White House
and members of the Con-
gress what it deemed to be
an inequity.
