State Board of Education, 1709 Ford Building, Detroit, MI. 48226 SAMUEL LEWIS over the Golan Heights would, if passed, be "more serious" than the "Jerusalem Law." This would be the case be- cause annexation of the Golan would constitute a violation of Security Coun- cil Resolution 242 while the law declaring Israel's sov- ereignty over Jerusalem simply affirmed a situation that has existed since 1967, Lewis reportedly told Be- gin. But sources called the report "unauthorized and inaccurate." Israeli officials said Lewis requested a meet- ing with Begin to discuss a number of issues before the American envoy leaves on a vacation in Egypt. One official said the ex- tensive coverage of the meeting by the local media inflated it out of proportion. Nothing new was said at the meeting, he noted. The American position has been known for several months, the official said. Without suggesting the source of the leak, officials insi ted it did not come from the Israeli side. They also denied a report that Begin promised Lewis that he would act to persuade Knes- set members not to support the Golan bill. The measure was intro- duced by Geula Cohen of the ultra-nationalist Tehiya faction. The leadership of the co- alition Knesset faction passed it on last week for review by the Cabinet, dashing the hopes of its supporters for speedy proc- essing. s Going-into-winter-sale. The French government may have been too complacent about right- wing violence, the French police may well have been infiltrated, and the government and the police have been too lenient about a variety of Arab terrorist acts (which have hit other Arabs as well as Jews). But to suggest that any departure from the orthodoxy of Israel's foreign policy stands is a license for anti-Semitism is obnoxious. It is the truth that is relevant, and all the facts should be taken into consideration judging a serious accusation that developed from the outrageous bombing in Paris. Generalizing when condemning an entire people is unfair. Even under Hitler there were very decent Germans. But the guilt of the French government, in its anti-Israelism and the credibility it accorded the PLO is apparent. This is more than regrettable. The Bias That Damages Human Credibility Treatment of the issues revolving around Israel's precarious position in the interna- tional community is a test of the attitude of nations and also of the media and some correspondents. There are inerasable prejudices which need analysis because they are apt to mislead people. An example is offered in a column that has been syndicated by King Features. Nicholas Von Hoffman, who is known for antagonism to Israel in previous writings, gave praise to the woman who brandished a gun while hailing -t;_ inspirer of mass murder, Yasir Arafat, in an article entitled "Thank you, Vanessa Redgrave." The title reveals the aim of the column. But the author of it goes farther. He registers a defense for Ziad Abu Eain, the Arab terrorist whose deportation from the United States is now a matter for the courts. Abu Eain is charged with having planted a bomb in Tiberias, Israel which caused the death of two people and injured 36. The case against Eain was outlined in the Commentary column Sept. 5, 1980. Anti-Israelis, a handful of self-hating Jews whose venom is directed at their own people, and some anti-Semites, have joined in defense of the Arab terrorist. That's how hate operates: defense of Vanessa is combined with approval of terrorism. The King Features columnist supports these appeals to hatred. What a glorious role for a columnist whose pen is dipped in poison! Simon Wiesenthal's Renewed Warnings of Emerging Nazism Simon Wiesenthal, the courageous exposer of Nazis who have escaped punishment for their crimes during World War II, keeps issuing warnings of re-emerging Nazism. He has again expressed his admonitions of what keeps recurring. He states that what has happened in Paris, the wave of new crimes in European countries, does not happen overnight. He charges that authorities have ignored the problem. Wiesenthal, who will be Temple Beth El's guest lecturer Sunday, said in a statement in Bonn earlier this month: The last four years, I made resumes of rightwing activities. Every year, I sent memos of 20 to 30 pages to (German Social Democrat leader) Willy Brandt and (Christian Democratic chairman) Helmut Kohl with proposi- tions on how to handle the problem. I pointed out that the extreme rightists had left the propaganda stage and changed over to active terrorism. Wiesenthal pointed out that neo-Nazi incidents in Germany rose from 136 in 1974 to 206 in 1975, 319 in 1976, 616 in 1977, 992 in 1978 and 5,400 in 1979. These figures are in themselves shocking. Wiesenthal keeps warning of a rising militancy among extreme German rightists. The acts of violence included 22 attacks on people and numerous attacks on property, among them attempted bombings. Wiesenthal continued his warnings by declaring: "The next consequence will be active terror, and the German govern- ment cannot say this is completely unexpected." Wiesenthal said. "What happened in France did not come overnight either. This year, there were 40 attempts against Jewish persons, stores and synagogues. Jewish students going to school were attacked. "These incidents occurred not only in Paris but in cities like Marseille and Lyon. All of this was a warning. It was overlooked." Wiesenthal described the new right-wing terror as a signal letting the world know "we are alive." "This is a warning for all of us not to wait, because it might be too late," he said. While it is becoming generally apparent that Nazi propagandists are receiving aid and encouragement from anti-Semites everywhere and from PLO and Arab terrorists, Wiesenthal now warns that the German neo-Nazis could not exist without propaganda material supplied them by the American anti-Semite Gary Lauck of Lincoln, Neb. Wiesenthal says that Lauck has a mailing list of 20,000 distributed in five languages. This is an indication of the extent of the propaganda in many lands. There is another revelation by Wiesenthal, that Nazi groups have held reunions for years in Milan, Venice and South End, England. Are they joining, in view of what is happening in France and England as well as in Germany, in the reported spread of anti-Semitic propaganda? Wiesenthal does not believe in outlawing rightists, since that would mean pushing them underground. To control them he advocates infiltration of the groups by police. The Wiesenthal message to Detroiters will surely be of significance. Communities must mobilize to check the growing dangers. Fortunately Wiesenthal inspires an alert- ness that will surely inspire a measure of activisim against the threatened revivarOf barbarism which has already poisoned the air in many lands. An Episode ... Max Fisher ... Mayor Young .•. Press Freedom A responsible Detroiter told the story some weeks ago. He said that after Detroit Mayor Coleman Young had made an appeal in support of President Jimmy Cart re-election, he was asked how he'd feel if Ronald Reagan were elected. Mayor Youn t, reply was: "Max Fisher and I are like this," and he crooked two fingers as a boast of comradeship. Last week, appearing before the Michigan Avenue Community Organization to clarify his position and the city's on their protest against his handling of tax breaks to industry and problems in their area, he was greeted by a chant which commenced with: "In our hands is placed a power greater than Max Fisher's gold . This aroused some protests from people who called ale chant "racist." At least one citizen protested against the Detroit News' report for quoting the chant. Should Mayor Young have rebuked the chanters? Perhaps he had enough to handle to explain his position on tax matters. The protest was against the Detroit News for publishing the text of the chant. Therefore, an opinion: It is better that the truth should be known, that a major benefactor to every worthy cause is included in a rash composition by people who would like to count the gold that is registered publicly only when great gifts are made by the eminent Detroiter either to charity or to the advancement of his and their city's needs. The whole business is much more than "racist." It is just part of the stupidities that often arouse prejudices. (
