52 Friday, October 31, 1980 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS AN EDITORIAL COMMENT ON SADAT vs. HUSSEIN King Hussein's arrogance cost him the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He waE warned by Israel to stay out of the 1967 war which retains the historic description of the Six-Day War. He ignored the invitation to be peaceful and he paid the price for it. Since then he has acted the conceited role of flirting with everything that is anti-Israel and became anti- Jewish. Now he is backing Iraq with a repeated arrogance. Egypt's President Anwar el-Sadat understands him perhaps better than anyone else. Sadat has warned against Hussein's participation in the peace talks with Israel out of distrust for the Jordanian king. He repeated it in conversation with former Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, in Cairo. The chat was repeated in the Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot of Jerusalem. A translation of the converstation appeared in a bylined article from Jerusalem by Yoram Kessel (Oct. 10). Kessel's special article states: According to this report, President Sadat told Mr. Rabin: "No doubt you have heard that when I was at Camp David I received a message from one of my aides that Hussein was trying to contact me. He was in London, and the message he sent was that he was prepared to join (the Camp David ANWAR SADAT talks). It did not take me long to reach a decision that I simply must never let Hussein join me there." President Sadat continued: "If I had let him join the negotiations, we would never have achieved anything. The man is known throughout the Arab world as a black sheep. He has made no attempt to conceal that image. "The man in the street in the Arab world does not respect him, so I reached the conclusion that if he were to join us, there would be only bargaining, attempts to exploit the situation in order to build himself a new image in the Arab world. That is precisely what he is doing now . . . SAM & SONS FRUIT MARKET 6718 Orchard Lake Rd. 851-8020 Orchard Lake Rd. Hours , 13905 W. 9 Mile Rd. 399-9699 Daily 9 A.M.-8 P.M. Sunday 8 A.m.-6 P.M. I asked him: 'Is it true that you are prepared to join?' He replied: 'Yes,' I told him: Tine. We are making great efforts, but at the moment there is nothing positive, and I do not think that anything positive will emerge in the foreseeable future.' "I asked him what his plans were, and we agreed to meet in Morocco. I told him that, if a new situation developed, I would contact him again. "But from the first minute, I was sure — I had no misgivings about this at all — that we had to keep Hussein out at all costs, otherwise we would never reach an agreement. "Immediately thereafter, they (other parties) contacted Hussein. I don't know who, perhaps the Saudis, perhaps the Syrians or the Palestinians. "In any event, he (Hussein) went straight back to Amman from London. This, after we had agreed to meet in Morocco. "When I was informed of that, I shrugged and said: 'Well, that's typical of Hussein.' " Later, President Sadat also surprised Mr. Rabin by expressing opposi- tion to King Hussein's joining the Israeli-Egyptian talks even today. "Don't let us bring in the mentality of exploitation, of bargaining, of sloganeering," the President said. He continued: "I believe that, if Hussein were to join now, he would endanger the whole (negotiating) process, merely in order to prove that he is a greater patriot than me or to get another $200 million or $300 million a year." First, President Sadat said, Israel and Egypt should reach agreement on West Bank and Gaza Strip autonomy. King Hussein could come in at the end of the transition period. President Sadat is described as charismatic. He is even superior to that. He is courageous. He is that in relation to Hussein of Jordan and the other saber-rattlers in the Middle East. He showed his courage in his treatment of the late Shah of Iran. It is to be believed that he emphasizes the cravings of his people to be Egyptian rather than Arab. Therefore, the retained hope that Sadat can be the true participant in peace-making P.S. with Israel. . yr, 0 0 THIS WEEK ONLY ORCHARD LAKE ONLY OPEN 7 DAYS Mon. thru Sat., 8 to 6 p.m. I 4 it 4.. 3 lbs. $ f14 4,1 4, 7 r • lilt $ 4 49 t- REE PARKING SUNDAY 9 to 5 PM
