Back Israel
NEW YORK — There is
widespread support for Is-
raeli negotiating positions
and for foreign assistance
for the state of Israel among
Senate and House candi-
dates, according to a pre-
election poll commissioned
by "Near East Report"
which will appear in today's
issue. The survey, con-
ducted by the American Is-
rael Public Affairs Commit-
tee, also shows near-
unanimous rejection of the
PLO and a high level of op-
position to the sale of
sophisticated U.S. military
equipment to those Arab
states which have rejected
the Camp David process.
More than 200 incum-
bents and challengers re-
sponded to the AIPAC ques-
tionnaire. Many incum-
bents, including some of N-
rael's strongest supporters,
responded by saying their
records speak for them-
selves. In a post-election is-
sue, NER will review some
of the specific responses of
newly-elected senators and
representatives.

Jewish Journals
BALTIMORE — Two
tri-annual journals —
"Prooftexts: A Journal of
Jewish Literary History"
and "Modern Jewish
Studies" — will commence
publication at Johns Hop-
kins University Press early
in 1981.
"Prooftexts," edited by
Alan Mintz (Columbia
University) and David C.
Roskies (Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary), will deal
with medieval and modern
Hebrew and Yiddish litera-
ture: poetry, prose, essays,
drama, criticism; classical
Jewish literature: Bible,
Midrash, Hasidic exegesis
and narrative; and Ameri-
can Jewish literature and
Jewish literature in Euro-
pean languages.
The review-essays in
"Prooftexts" will comment
on relevant books, articles,
and journals in the field of
Jewish literature. The re-
view section will also pre-
sent and assess the work of
Israeli scholars.
Joining "Prooftexts" later
in the spring will be "Mod-
ern Jewish Studies" edited
by Steven Katz (Dartmouth
College). MJS will be dedi-
cated to the study of modern
Judaism in all forms. Arti-
cles will concentrate on
understanding thought and
history in broad terms, in-
cluding: standard historical
subjects, Zionism, studies of
modern anti-Semitism,
modern Jewish philosophy,
studies of the varieties of
modern Judaism, sociologi-
cal issues, studies of modern
Jewish literature, and polit-
ical and policy studies.
