The board flatly rejected claims by officials that the "Feast" was a student prank. It noted that anti- Semitic slogans such as "We hate Jews" and "Up Hitler" daubed on the walls of a men's residence hall made it clear that the raucus Nazi party was more than a joke. They are seeking to become aware bf the great social and moral values which will bring meaning into their lives, and they are turning to Jewish sources and traditions for the great ideals which have always been a part of our heritage." In this optimistic fashion spoke Prof. Ephraim Katzir, former president of Israel and honorary chairman of Gesher Educational Af- filiates. Prof. Katzir's -affiliation with Gesher began in 1973, shortly after he became president. The organization was then in its infancy. Today Gesher Educational Affiliates provides pro- grams in Jewish identity for 50,000 Israeli youth each year through its Gesher Encounters and Institutes for Zionist and Jewish Edu- cation. Gesher's David Schoen Institute has created cur- riculum material such as the Bnai Mitzva program now being implemented in 2,000 classes in non- religious schools across Israel. Gesher's approach is to bring together religious and non-religious youth in open dialogue. Prof. Katzir spoke most enthusiastically about this achievement. "Gesher, because of its openess, has found a way to build a bridge between observant and non-observant youngsters in Israel. This has been accomplished through the seminars at Beit Gesher in Safed, where the dialogue has been open and frank." In 1974, Prof. Katzir in- vited some members of Gesher to the President's House in Jerusalem for Sec- ond Hakafot at the conclu- sion of Simhat Torah. "I be- lieved that a promising movement had been started, and this was the way the President of Israel could encourage it. "I also wanted to meet the youth, observant and non- observant, at first hand. Moreover, as an experimen- tal scientist, I wanted to find out what their personal reactions were to the Gesher Program . . . "I chatted with these boys and girls," the pro- fessor continued. "I was deeply touched not only by their spirited singing era. Recent events in France and elsewhere in Europe . suggest that the function may well have a sinister significance," the board's statement said.
