Political Action Urged in Defense of Israel

Addressing some 100
community personalities, at
a luncheon meeting Wed-
nesday, at Tam-O-Shanter
Country Club, Thomas
Dine, newly-elected execu-

tive vice president of the
American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee (AIPAC)
urged serious concern in the
need for political action to
defend Israel's role as a
strategic factor in Ameri-
ca's foreign policy in the
Ile East.
ne spoke of the need to
counteract Arab prop-
aganda which is becoming
of serious concern in
American-Israel relations,
and warned that Arabs are
spending 16 to 1 financing
attacks on Israel.
Declaring that Israel con-
tinues to have strong Con-
gressional Support, Dine
said that a number of Is-
rael's friends are facing
strong opposition for re-
/ - election Tuesday and he
gave an outline of prospect's
\_ for the future in the events
of serious changes in party
line-ups in the next Con-
gress.
Janet Aronoff, who as-
sumed the chairmanship
of the Greater Detroit
AIPAC Committee, as
successor to Morris
Brandwine and W.B.
Doner, presided and
called for action in behalf
of the movement for Is-
rael's protection through
political as well as educa-
tional actions. She em-
phasized the need to keep
the community, non-
Jewish as well as Jewish,
fully informed on Israel's
vital role as the strongest
friend of the U.S. in the
Middle East.
She was joined by Robert
Naftaly in calling for in-
creased membership
enrollment in the AIPAC
movement to assure protec-
tion for Israel and for the
U.S. position in the Middle
East.
Mrs. Aronoff and Dine
joined in urging the com-
munity to ask members of
Congress from Michigan to
support the House Foreign

Assistance Appropriations
Bill (HR7854), which calls
for nearly $2.2 billion in aid
for Israel ($1.4 billion mili-
