A White House spokesman, however, indi- cated pleasure at Weiz- man's appearance__Tuesday on Carter's plane while w he was campaigning in Ohio. Weizman, now a member of the Knesset visiting the U.S. as a private citizen, has made no contact with the Is- raeli Embassy. An embassy spokesman said Israel's position is that Weizmann is acting in a personal capacity, that he does not represent Israel in any way and that the Israel govern- ment's policy is not to be- come involved even by im- plication in this and other elections. At the White House, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was told by a spokesman: "We are quite pleased to have him, of course. His ac- tion speaks for itself. It is a personal thing for himself. Obviously, he feels the president is a great friend of Israel and wants to repay him for what he did for Is- rael by speaking for him. This is the first time an Is- raeli of his stature has done this but it is not without precedent. Zimbabwe's- prime minister, Robert Mugabe, made an outright endorsement of the President in his visit here." The U.S. media barely Weizman's noticed presence on the President's campaign plane. The only report was contained in a Wash- ington Post story which noted that the President, - campaigning in West Virginia and Ohio, was accompanied by "an un- usual ally in a President. ial election" — Weizman. The New York Times re- ferred to Weizman as "a surprise guest among the local politicians ac- companying Mr. Carter aboard Air Force One." While some Jewish ac- tivists supporting the President's election recalled the criticism of Yitzhak Rabin who openly sup- ported the re-election of President Nixon in 1972 when Rabin was Israeli am- bassador to tke U.S., none hAd good words for Weiz- man. The closest note of tolerance for Weizman's ac- tion came from a source close to the White House. "I don't like it all," the source said. "But it is not an unreasonable thing for Weizman who is so active to express his view. It is crude and politically damaging to Carter• for his (Weizman) being on the campaign trail. I feel ambivalent about him because the Administration is being savaged on its re- cord on Israel and I can see how he wants to say the Administration has been good for Israel." Weizman represented the EZER WEIZMAN Weizmann Institute on his visit. (Reports from Philadelphia and Chicago, where he addressed Jewish audiences, are that his in- trusion into American poli- tics was deeply resented.) The Israel Cabinet Tuesday issued an offi- cial statement in the name of Prime Minister Begin expressing "deep regret at MK Ezer Weiz- man's interference in the U.S. democratic electoral process" and upholding the principle of non- interference. The state- ment reflected a sense of outrage at Weizman's be- havior throughout the country Tuesday. Weizman himself, in a Kol Israel Radio interview broadcast Tuesday, refused to express any regret. When the interviewer pointed out that his state- ments endorsing Carter for re-election were "unprece- dented" Weizman observed that it was "always good to be the first." Asked about the possi- ble effect of his words and actions on relations with Reagan, Weizman, said he was sure Reagan would have liked him `Weizman) to say those things about him (Re- agan). "But I don't know him . . ." Opinion around the Cabinet table was wholly negative and critical re- garding Weizman's be- havior. There were repor- tedly reflections by minis- ters on their former col- league's irresponsibility and tendency to impetuous- ness.
