Eban Gives
Sadat Vote
of Confidence

NEW YORK — Former
Foreign Minister Abba
Eban voiced his confidence
in Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat recently,
when he told a group at New
York's Cong. Bnai Jeshu-
run of a meeting with Sadat
in-Cairo.
Eban recounted how im-
patient the Egyptian lead-
ers was with those who
wonder out loud what might
happen to the peace process
with Israel "if Sad -at goes."
"Why do they keep harp-
ing on 'if Sadat goes?' " the
resident asked. "What
bout when Carter and
Begin go? Why am I the only
one of the signers of the
Camp David accords subject
to the laws of political and
biological mortality?"
Eban added that of the
three, he was betting on
Sadat as having the best
chance of still being in
power next year.

Cabinet Member
Calls for El Al
Reorganization

JERUSALEM — Israel's
El Al Airlines, which lost
$98.6 million in 1979, "had
better reorganize itself be-
cause the state cannot prop
it up much longer," accord-
ing to Transport Minister
Haim Landau.
Landau co,nceded that
virtually all U.S. airlines
and the leading European
carriers have been losing
money but he believed it
Would be possible for the
government-backed carrier
to get out of the red. The
minister said that he had
commissioned a consulting
firm to study the problems
at El Al because the corn-
pany's management failed
to give him a clear picture of
its operations.
The recently completed
report, done by the McKin-
sey consulting firm, ad-
vises, among other things,
cancelling of unprofitable
routes and more aggressive
marketing tactics for the
airline.

U.S. Refuses
to Disclose
Arab Assets

NEW YORK Honoring
a secret agreement with
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait,
the U.S. Treasury Depart-
ment has refused to dis
close, on a country-by-
country basis, the United
States-based assets and in-
.vestments of Middle East oil
',sates, according to the Sep-
-`comber issue of "Petro-
Impact," a bi-monthly pub-
lication of the American
Jewish Committee's Insti-
tute of Human Relations.
The agreement, accord-
ing to a report on a new
study by the House Com-
mittee on Government Op-
erations, "has hampered
U.S. government efforts to
devise sound U.S. policy on
foreign investments."
