Jesse Zel Lurie, who has been in charge of both de- partments for the past 33 years, retired as editor. Alan Tigay, the former editor of the Near East Re- port, has assumed the duties of editor with Lurie as the publisher. Former Detroiter Tigay has been editor-in-chief of the Near East Report, a weekly pro-Israel newslet- ter on American policy in the Middle East since 1978. Before that, as a freelance writer, his articles appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, Washington Star and the Baltimore Sun. He has also been a New York correspondent for the North American -News- paper Alliance and United Features Syndicate. Tigay was born in De- troit, has a BA from the University of Michigan and a Master's degree from the Columbia Uni- versity Graduate School of Journalism. He has lived for extended periods in Israel and in Japan and speaks Hebrew and Japanese. He has also traveled widely in Asia and Africa. FolloWing a briefing with Reagan three months ago in Washington, Peres is said to have repeatedly told report- ers, "Reagan knows as much about the Middle East as I do about making films in Hollywood."
