iThe Best of Everything
MARIO'S ON SECOND
has not for so many years
been just a typically good
Detroit restaurant . . . It
justifiably continues to be
ranked as one of the best.
It is located in one of De-
troit's unlovelier sections,
but the old "Tenderloin"
doesn't inhibit Mario's cus-
tomers . . . They come from
far and wide for superb Ita-
lian dining.
It had been opened in
1948 by Mario Lelli and
brother Nello . . . The new
owner as of only a few weeks
ago is Frank Passalacqua
. .
wife Arlene . .
and ev
erything
everything remains the
same . . . although in some
instances it is even better.
There's the same Old
World comfort and huge
menu. . . same chefs . . .
same waiters (though
Frank has thoughts
about those with
matter-of-fact compla-
cency) . . . same quiet
decor . . . same clean
look . . . same dishes and
antiques on ledges . . .
same soft lighting.
Same 20 different ap-
petizers . . . same eight
homemade soups . . . same
food bought fresh everyday
. . . same 10 kinds of salads
. . . same six veal dishes
prepared at the table . .
same over 100 entrees.
Since Mario decided to
sell and retire with wife
Guerina, he couldn't have
sold to a better liked or more
knowledgeable person than
Frank Passalacqua.
Franks's dad, Jimmy
Passalacqua, made the first
pizza served in Detroit . . .
during the early .40s at his
Vesuvius Restaurant on
Gratiot and Mt. Elliot.
Also, Frank is in the
same mold as Mario
when he was younger
. . . Both have pleasing
personalities . . . both
know everything there is
to know about running a
very fine operation . . .
and both love to and are
no slouches at knowing
how to cook.
"Mario's is listed almost
everywhere as one of the top
places to go when in Detroit
. . . by Duncan Hines,
Holiday Travel Gourmet,
Dining • Out in American
Cities, Guide to Distinctive
Dining, etc.
Its menu consists of a
great many dishes not found
anywhere else in Detroit
. . and features the ele-
gance of truly fine northern
Italian dining.
Dishes galore are served
with exotic cream sauces
. . . and flambe'd in various
wines . . . The veal for
which Mario's is famous is
the best that can be bought
. . . and you won't find bet-
ter steaks and chops at too
many places.
Specialties prepared at
the table are kisses of joy
. . . like Veal Olympic
(thin slices of veal sim-
mered in butter, then
flamed, flavored with
cognac, sherry, mush-
rooms, green onions and
cream) . . . light and tart
