THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, October 24, 1980 21 We believe supporting Ronald Reagan is in the best interest of Israel. Carter's "mistake" vote in the UN was not in the best interest of Israel or the United States. On March 1st, 1980, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 465 con- demning Israel, ordering it to dismantle settle- ments on the West Bank and in Jerusalem. On Carters orders, our U.N. ambassador voted to go along with this resolution. Immediately, accusations of betrayal and desertion were brought against the administration. And so, two days later, after much embar- rassment and double-talking, Carter told a stunned world that our U.N. vote was really a mistake—a breakdown of communications. But nobody was fooled. And our flip-flop foreign policy was once again exposed to world ridicule. In contrast, Ronald Reagan's position on the U.N. resolution is clear and unequivocal. Shortly after Carter's "mistake" yes vote, Reagan said: "I would have directed the Ambassador to vote 'no.' Joel Adelman Jim Alexander Helen and Jay Allen Ben J. This is a crucial election for the United States and Israel. Never before have relations be- tween the two countries reached such a critical state. If the Carter Administration's policy toward Israel isn't stopped this election year the result will be disastrous!
