Jewish Control
Over Jerusalem
NEW YORK — The inde-
lible 3,000-year record of
Jerusalem reveals a city of
dynamic progress and an
enhanced and vital
spiritual, cultural and so-
cial existence for its inhabi-
tants under J.wish rule, ac-
cording to Gershon Mamlak
in his article "Jerusalem —
City of Three Religions."
The article appears in the
September issue of Mid-
}ream magazine.
The historic record re-
searched by Mamlak reve-
als that only during its first
thousand years when
Judaism and Jews domi-
nated Jerusalem was it a vi-
tal, thriving city. In stark
contrast, he emphasizes,
during the next two millen-
nia, under Christian and
Moslem sovereignty,
Jerusalem ceased to exist as
a city.
According to Mamlak, its
once famous vineyards,
blossoming orchards and
olive groves withered away;
and its paved streets and
store buildings decayed.
In the article, Mamlak
concludes: "No amount of
political fiction and
glorified saga can obscure
the historic facts that Is-
lamic leaders voluntarily
handed over Jerusalem in
the 12th Century to non-
Islamic forces out of sheer
political expediency in
order to acquire the co-
operation of non-Islamic
leaders in their inter-
Islamic rivalries."

ADL White Paper
on Middle East
for Christians
NEW YORK — The
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith is distributing
"A White Paper: The Middle
East Today" to Christian
clergy, church officials and
lay leaders in an effort to
clarify the basic issues of
the Arab-Israeli conflict.
According to Rabbi
Ronald B. Sobel, chairman
of ADL's program commit-
tee, advance copies of the
publication — a series of
questions and answers —
has been sent to the group of
church executives and staff
now preparing a policy
statement on the Middle
East for submission to the
November meeting of the
National Council of
Churches' governing board
in New York.
"Our immediate pur-
pose," Rabbi Sobel said, "is
to respond to incorrect for-
mulations and dangerous
recommendations in earlier
NCC drafts which, we feel,
can have a deleterious and
regressive effect on the
movement for peace set into
motion by the Camp David
accords."
The "White Paper," Rabbi
Sobel said, is the first step in
a long range ADL program
aimed at creating better
understanding of the Mid-
dle East situation by non-
Jews.
