Begin also assailed
French Interior Minister

Begin said. He quoted
Bonnet as saying that

President Valery Giscard
d'Estaing. They accuse it of
having failed to take firm
action in time and at the
same time are trying to
build a strong opposition
front based on anti-racist
and anti-fascist sentiments.
Anti-Semitic incidents
have increased ten-fold, ac-
cording to police reports.
These included an attack
against a Jewish civilian
police employee who was
shot in the head. Police said
that the attack on 58-year-
old Maurice Cohen, an ad-
ministrative clerk with the
Paris police department,
could be connected with the
current wave of anti-
Semitic attacks. Cohen is
described as seriously in-
jured but no longer in criti-
cal condition.
The other incidents in-
cluded fist fights, daubings
of anti-Semitic slogans and
the arrest of two men in
Nice who shouted during an
anti-fascist demonstration,
-"Jews into gas ovens" and
"Hitler should have gotten
them all."
Police arrested at least
a dozen rightwing ac-
tivists, including an 81-
year-old former Vichy
col-
government
laborator. Ten others
were arrested in the
south of France and are
being interrogated on
charges of having mailed
last month's death
threats to 67 local Jewish
personalities.
Jewish militants at-
tacked a group of rightwing
extremists . on Sunday,
wounding two men, one of
them neo-Nazi leader Marc
Fredriksen, founder of the
outlawed Federation of
European Nationalist Ac-
tion (FANE). They were
clubbed and stabbed but re-
portedly are not in danger.

Fredriksen suffered a
broken wrist, head injuries
and stab woulds in his thigh
and was hospitalized.
An anonymous caller told
wire services in Paris that
the "Jewish Brigades" car-

ried out the attack. He said
"We know the Nazis. They
are safe nowhere and we
will pursue them wherever
they may hide." The Jewish
youths, who wore helmets
and carried clubs, am-
bushed the neo-Nazis at a
small railway station where
they were waiting to board a
train. The extremist neo-
Nazi group was planning to
spend a day at Rambouillet
forest for training in karate
and street fighting.
Last Friday night, the
bombed temple in Rue
Copernic had a heavy
Sabbath attendance.
Police security was very
heavy.
Leaders of the French
Jewish community were
present, headed by Baron
Alain de Rothschild,
president of the Represen-
tative Council of Jewish
Organizations in France
(CRIF). The French gov
ernment was represented
by Undersecretary of Labor
Lionel Stoleru.
From the United States
were Rabbi Alexander
Schindler representing the

Major American Jewish
Organizations and Edgar

major
Meanwhile,
demonstrations were held
throughout Europe to pro-
test the incident. In Rome,
5,000 persons representing
one-third of that city's
Jewish community,
attended a rally. Jewish
shops in Brussels closed for
several hours last week in
protest.
In Cleveland, 400 per-
sons attended a special
memorial service at the
Jewish Community Fed-
eration building.
In Detroit, several
letter-writing campaigns
have begun. The Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith is urging letters of
