he Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 36)
instructor, joins the many
who hope to clarify miscon-
ceptions about Country-
Western music . . . It's not
the down-on-the-farm kind
of stuff, but music all its
own played to a rock beat
. . . Country-Western music
and dancing is fun.
Jack teaches Country-
Western dance steps at To-
pinka's Country House,
Seven Mile and Telegraph,
on Wednesday evenings.
DAVE SHERMAN,
former knowledgeable gent
of the restaurant game, is
now with General Wines,
owned by Al Kaplan and Sid
Ross.
THE BLUE PARROT
CLUB, Northwestern and
12 Mile, is Southfield's
latest jazz and blues spot .. .
The Progressive Blues Band
appears every Monday and
Tuesday and the Imperials
every Sunday.
THE CONCERTS a la
Carte series presented at
Yvonne Gill's • Tweeney's
Cafe on N. Woodward in
Birmingham is every Mon-
day night . . . This next one
will be a 17th-18th Century
program . . . and Oct. 27 will
be compositions by Julius
Chajes . . . with Misha
Rachlevsky, violin; David
Saltzman, cello, and Julius
himself on piano.
There's a different menu
each week at Tweeney's .. .
including hot and cold hors
d'oeuvres and a choice of
three entrees . . . The tables
are then cleared and fol-
lowing the performances,
dessert and coffee are
served.
TONY PALERMO,
head chef at Alfred's Res-
taurant in Somerset Mall,
has his favorite pots, pans
and special spices all packed
for the "World Cham-
pionship Chili Cookoff,"
Oct. 26, at the Paramount
Movie Ranch outside Los
Angeles.
This past May, Tony won
the North Central Competi-
tion, held in Saline, against
contestants from 11 states
. . . But this is really the
"biggie," with trophies and
cash prizes totaling $35,000
. . . $20,000 goes to the first
place winner . . . second
place $7,500, third is $2,500
and $1,500 and $500 to the
fourth and fifth place win-
ners respectively .. .
Since beer and chili seem
to go together, the Bud-
weiser people offer their
"King of Beer, King of
Chili" trophy to the first
place winner.
Cookoffs are supposed
to be fun, not only for the
audience but also for the
contestants ... Partici-
pants are encouraged to
decorate their booth,
wear costumes and
entertain the judges and
viewers ... Showman-
ship prizes, from $1,500 to
$500, will be awarded for
the most creative, origi-
nal and entertaining
production.
Fifteen celebrities, dig-
nitaries and members of the
International Chili Society
will make up the panel of

judges . . . Joanne Dru, Car-
roll Shelby and Peter Mar-
shall, considered chili ex-
perts, will be among the
judges as will food editors
from national magazines
and the society . . . Peter
Marshall and Joe- Landes
will appear in a television
special being aired early
1981.
Wine tasters use cheese to
cleansy the palate, but chili
tasters have found raw cel-
ery and carrots, and beer
best to renew their taste
buds . . . Judges will be look-
ing for a good chili pepper
taste, but not too hot, sub-
stantial meat texture, and
unique blending of spices
. . . and NO beans . . . Beans
are taboo, and you're dis-
qualified if one bean is
found in your chili.
Tony studied at the Culi-
nary Institute of America in
Hyde Park, New York .. .
and has been with Al
Loewenstein at Alfred's five
years . . . head chef for three
. . . The special chili is his
own original recipe.
