Not only Jewish bas- ketball players, but since non-Jewish players (one to a team) are permitted to per- form with the National League in the Holy Land, -- we see a steady influx of our boys settling in Israel. As a matter of fact, I checked out one of the players and I was told by his college coach here that when he attended school he was listed as a Catholic. Not only is this boy now a citizen of Israel, but he has already completed his army service and will be eligible, I presume, for the Israel Na- tional Basketball Team. The general's thinking was that if he and some of his cohorts back home could induce some seven or eight quality athletes to settle in Israel, the country would be in a position to do much bet- ter in the 1980 Olympics. A member of the Olympic Executive Board, Harold Zimman of Lynn, Mass., tried to convince Doron to desist. Zimman felt that the experiment was doomed to failure. P. S. The per- centage for those over 50 was 34 percent; for those under 35, 22 percent. This would indicate a strengthening of Judaism among the young. It would appear that marriages be- fore World War II or in the `50s were more frequently mixed. About one-half of French Jews are middle level executives, salaried em- ployees or wage workers. According to the poll, 57 percent of the Jewish com- munity (taking into account the retired and the unem- ployed) have modest in- comes. The number of children in Jewish day schools in France is about 5,000. This does not include children who attend a twice a week talmud Torah or a cheder. In Paris and its suburbs there are 5,000 such chil- dren. The Consistoire Cen- tral Israelite de France is the official representa- tive of French Judaism. It is responsible for the training and appoint- ment of rabbis, religious instruction and the supervision of kashrut. In Paris there are 15,000 paying members of synagogues. The figure for France as a whole is 25,000 to 28,000. The Fonds Social Juif Un- ifie (FSJU) the United Jewish Philanthropic Fund, has been developing from a body for the division and distribution of funds to edu- cational, cultural, philan- thropic and religious in- stitutions and groups into the principal Jewish com- munal structure in France, an inclusive framework un- iting religious and non- religious Jews. In 1976 the FSJU and the Jewish Agency agreed to cooperate in the field of Jewish educa- tion, information about Is- rael and aliya.
