Sinai Finds Alternative to Hysterectomy
for Excess Menstrual Bleeding in Women

An alternative to hys-
terectomies for women suf-
fering from menorrhagia,
excessive menstrual bleed-
ing, has been developed at
Sinai Hospital of Detroit by
Milton H. Goldrath, MD,
chairman of Obstetrics and
Gynecology, in conjunction

with Terry Fuller, PhD,
chief of Laser Surgery and
Shmuel Segal, MD.
In use for nearly two
years, the alternative pro-
cedure has been shown to
produce a 96 percent rate of
success.
Called laser photovapori-
zation of endometrium, the
procedure is used to treat
menorrhagia, a common
female disorder. According
to Dr. Goldrath: "We have
devised a technique utiliz- •
ing a laser through a small
hysteroscope which de-
stroys the lining of the
uterus to such an extent
that menses either cease
entirely or are reduced to
two to three days of stain-
ing."
In the past, D and C's
and/or hormone treat-
ments were prescribed
for women who were

bleeding excessively. If
these failed, women had
only two alternatives —
either to endure heavy
bleeding or undergo
major surgery — a hys-
terectomy.
Of the 600,000 hysterec-
tomies performed annually
in the U.S., it is estimated
that 25 percent of these op-
erations are performed on
women with no serious ab-
normalities other than
heavy menstrual flow.
Not only is there pain
with hysterectomies, but
the precedure is also costly,
requiring seven- to eight-
day hospital stays and ap-
proximately eight weeks of
recuperation time.
The new laser procedure
requires only overnight
hospitalization or none at
all. There is virtually no
pain involved with photo-

Tanenbaum Hits New Right'

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum,
national interreligious af-
fairs director of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee,
joined with three Protestant
and Catholic clergymen in
denouncing public policy
positions of the "new right
evangelicals" or "the new
Christian right."
While supporting paitici-
pation in the political proc-
ess of all Americans, the
clergymen told a news con-
ference here last week that
the activity is a threat to
both church and state.
Besides Tanenbaum, the
participants ' were
Dr.Jimmy Allen, past
president of the 'Baptist
Convention and now
president of the Radio and
Television Commission;
Msgr. George Higgins of the
Catholic University of
American and formerly of
the U.S. Catholic Confer-
ence; and Dr. Charles
Bergstron, executive direc-
tor of the Office of Gov-
ernmental Affairs of the
Lutheran Council in the
U.S.A.
"No responsible and
fair-minded American
questions the right of fel-
low Americans of
Evangelical Christian or
any other religious or
moral persuasion to par-
ticipate fully as citizens
in the political process
nor to advocate the adop-
tion of public policy posi-
tions which reflect their
bent,"
ideological
Tanenbaum said.

He pointed out, however,
that "during the past 15
months, there have been a
number of actions and
statements by major
spokesmen of this newly
forged alliance of several
Evangelical Christian lead-
ers and ultra-conservative
political organizers which
have become deeply troubl-
ing to many of us, and which
require, we believe, careful
analytical scrutiny by both
presidential candidates and
by the American people."
He noted that "a number
of major spokesmen of the

new Christian right' assert
that their primary purpose
in this election, and through
related political activity on
the local levels, is to Chris-
tianize America' and to es-
tablish 'a Christian repub-
lic.' That is a myth for
American democracy which
must not go uncontested.

The only similarities
between the two surgical
procedures — the hys-

that women are rendered
sterile and the excessive
bleeding ceases.
For this development,
Drs. Goldrath, Fuller and
