Since 1946, when the
Gruskins came as a young
couple to Detroit from New
York, the rabbi has served
as a chaplain to Jewish
residents of state institu-
tions for the mentally ill
and retarded.
Rabbi Gruskin, of
Cong. Bnai Zion in Oak
Park, has maintained
contact with many
former patients who have
been released -through-
out southeastern Michi-
gan. He notes that a sig-
nificant number are liv-
ing in substandard
boarding homes, often in
high crime areas and par-
ticularly far from Jewish
life. JARC's Haverim
Homes, he said, have
demonstrated what a car-
ing community can do
about the situation.
Rabbi Gruskin credited a
great number of individuals
and organizations, includ-
ing those that comprise the
Cooperative Council, for
helping bring some "Yid-
dishkeit" into the lives of
the mentally handicapped.
Their funds helped pur-
chase kosher food and clo-
thing, provided spending
money and helped Rabbi
Gruskin arrange holiday
gatherings outside the in-
situtions several times a
year.
He added that his wife
has shared fully in his chap-
laincy, even joining him on
emergency visits to in-
. stitutionalized patients.
Rabbi Gruskin, who
taught at the Mesivta Torah
Vodaath in Brooklyn before
moving to Ddtroit in 1946, is
the former executive direc-
tor of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah.
