the National Park Serv-
ice had not been a tradi-
tional government
agency for Jews since the
Park Service is com-
monly considered an
agency which deals with
western wilderness areas
and natural resources.
"However, since 1972,
with the establishment by
the Congress of Gateway
and other urban recreation
areas in major metropolitan
complexes such as San
Francisco, Cleveland and
elsewhere, we are begin-
ning to see more oppor-
tunities for educated and
dedicated professionals of
all ethnic and religious per-
suasions," Adlerstein says.
"In fact, I've not had any
problems, nor have I felt
any pressures in the Park
Service because of the fact
that I'm Jewish," he adds.

Are Jewish
Languages Dying
Out in Russia?

LONDON — Recently re-
leased data from the 1979
Soviet census reveals that
the decline in the use of
Jewish languages by the
USSR's Jewish minority be-
tween 1970 and 1979 was
proportionately greater
than the marked decline in
the total Jewish population.
This and other informa-
tion on the cultural state of
Soviet Jewry are contained
in an analysis of the new
data published as a research
report by the Institute of
Jewish Affairs in London.
The tables produced in
the report, which supple-
ment and amend calcula-
tions made in a previous re-
port (April 1980) show a
serious weakening in the
attachment of the Jewish
minority to its own lan-
guages.
In Birobidzhan, the so-
called Jewish region, the
percentage of Yiddish
speakers is only slightly
higher than in the USSR as
a whole.
