It May Be a Mitzva to Vote

By DAVID FRIEDMAN

But feelings, especially

Now that the Presidential are so strong that there is

been the year of "none of the

distaste for all of the candi-

This accounts for the im-

George McGovern (D-SD),
some Jews didn't vote. An
argument has been made
that this, too, is a vote: it
shows that we reject the
type of candidates the sys-
tem offers. But this is a cop-
out.
After all, someone has to
be President. All Americans
should take part in select-
ing him, or perhaps some-
day, her, even if it comes
down to deciding on the best
of the bad lot, or the one who
is least bad. For how else
can Jews, as individuals
and as a group, have any
influence on the federal
government?
Why should anybody lis-
ten to them if they don't
take part in the selection
process?
What right have they to
gripe if they sit on their
hands Nov. 4?
Of course, there are other
reasons to vote besides the
Presidential election. There
are important races for the
U.S. Senate and the House
where some of Israel's most
ardent supporters are fac-
ing tough battles. There
may be local contests and it
should be remembered that
in those states where the
State Legislatures are
being elected the new legis-
latures will be reapportion-
ing Congressional districts
in the wake of the just-
completed 1980 census.
If these appeals to civic
virtue and reason aren't
enough, let me repeat a
suggestion offered by a
Washington journalist on
television recently: Surely
you must know someone
whose vote you would like to
negate.
