Opposing Reviews of 'Playing for Time'
Editor, The Jewish News:
Arnold Schoenberg, the
famous Viennese composer,
grew up in an assimilated
house and later converted to
Christianity. After Hitler's
rise to power, Schoenberg
fled to California and re-
turned to Judaism.
Schoenberg wrote "A
Survivor from Warsaw." In
spite of the fact that this
composition quotes in a few
places the theme of Kol
Nidre, no Jew could find
this composition "Jewish."
It isn't surprising since the
composer had no Jewish
feelings nor background.
The same theory could
be applied to the recent
movie "Playing for
Time." Fania Fenelon is
an assimilated French
woman. Arthur Miller
has never written any-
thing on a Jewish sub-
ject. Vanessa Redgrave is
a real anti-Semite and
wanted us to believe she
understands the Jewish
suffering under Hitler.
Just as I could not find
any identification in
Israel: World's Scapegoat

As a survivor of the
Holocaust and a serious
student of the subject, I ap-
prove of the courage of CBS
to retain Vanessa Redgrave
in the role of Fania Fenelon,
inspite of all of the protests.
The only issue of signifi-
cance for the producers was
the ability of the actress to
portray this extremely dif-
ficult role.
Ms. Redgrave gave a
magnificent performance
and demonstrated that the
right choice was made.
The political beliefs of Ms.
Redgrave, like her religion
or national origin, are of no
relevance to her capacity to
function as an artist. The
paintings of Van Gogh re-
main works of art, even
though his private life was
less than perfect.
As a survivor, I am

minority. This is a policy
that not one of the UN
members has chosen to fol-
low themselves.
There are very few, if any,
nations that do not have a
minority that can and does
claim self-determination
and the right to split off and
split up a country into
fragments of separate
nationalities. If the policy
were given free rein and
carried to its extreme con-
clusion — Great Britain
would have to split into at
least five parts — Northern
Ireland, Scotland, Wales,
Ulster — and the remaining
Britain — a country that
would become of insignific-
ant importance among the
nations of the world.
The French would face a
similar situation, as would
Belgium, Russia and others.
Yet, these countries
would like to see Israel
fragment itself into weak
and indefensible pieces
— to pay for a short-
signted policy of ap-
peasement of Arab na-
tions and PLO, to mistak-
ingly gain an extra gallon
of oil.
The answer and reasons
are clear— envy of a Jewish
state that established itself
against all odds and is the
light and beacon in a world
that is morally and cultur-
ally thqusands of years be-
hind.
The hunger for power,
energy and materialism
makes us blind to justice
due a small but highly spi-
rited people. If we ignore or
reject fair and honest ap-
praisal of the situation, we
usually wind up paying de-
arly for it.

having played this difficult
role, even though I reject
her political views.

Having previously re-
viewed the book "Playing
for Time" (The Jewish
News, Feb. 10, 1978) this
writer felt compelled to
watch the TV version —
particularly after the con-
troversy and advance pub-
licity.
I am convinced that Van-
essa Redgrave was chosen
precisely to exploit the an-
ticipated public uproar for
profit.
In spite of much advance
billing the film was at best
mediocre. It is much too
long, with several repeW.
ous scenes, with sever
episodes unclear, and with
about 30 advertising items
sneaked in for CBS profits.
It is a pity that CBS mis-
sed a great potential of de-
picting a facet of the
Holocaust effectively in the
maze of propaganda, pride,
spite and profit.

The Prayers of the Jews

Speaking in all candor
and innocently proclaiming
that he is only saying what
he has been taught since he
was "five years old," Dr.
Bailey Smith, president of
the Southern Baptist Con-
vention, pronounced that
"God Almighty does not
hear the prayer of a Jew."
Actually, Dr. Smith is not
to be condemned because
the opinion he expresses is
not his own. It is the official
opinion of all persuasions of
the fundamentalist Chris-
tian Church. The classical
Christian view has always
been that there is no salva-
tion for those who reject
Christ as Lord and Savior;
prayer is effective only
when it is addressed to the
Father through his only be-
gotten Son, Jesus. All the
rest of mankind is doomed
to Hell and damnation. All
students of the Christian
religion know this.
In speaking out of
school in this manner, Dr.
Bailey Smith is only
showing that he's not
much of a diplomat, but
every devout Christian is
convinced of this tenet.
Furthermore, it is this be-
lief that generated the
blood libels, expulsions,
inquisitions and pogroms
that have characterized
European and Jewish
history down through the
ages.
What a lively contrast
this is to the Jewish view, so
clearly expressed by the
prophet Isaiah (56.7), "For
My House shall be called a
House of Prayer for all na-
tions."

Bakeries Are Challenged
Editor, The Jewish News:
Our country has finally
become more health con-
scious and people are be-
coming more concerned
about nutrition. It's becom-
ing more and more clear
that we are what we eat.
There is still a lot of dis-
agreement about nutrition,
but there are at least two
matters where there seems
to be little disagreement:
Refined white flour is
robbing us of essential B
and E vitamins important
to good health and main-
taining a good heart. Also,
refined white sugar is the
cause of a long list of ail-
ments from bad teeth to
clogging arteries.
The Jewish bakery is a
kind of tradition in the
Jewish community. The
Jewish bakery continues to
make their food almost the
same way it was made 15-20
years ago — with white
sugar and white refined
flour.
Moreover, since the
bakeries are not required
to label their goods the
way other stores must do,
people are less aware of
the ingredients.
All of this is very ironic
Sam Grand since Jews are considered to
be the leaders in every field.
But, in the case of the
Jewish bakery we are last to
change.

Hungary to Be
WJC Member
NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Hungarian Jewish
community, the largest in
the Soviet bloc outside the
Soviet Union itself, has
applied for full membership
in the World Jewish Con-
gress.
A spokesman for the WJC
said approval of the applica-
tion is expected to be
unanimous, thus making
the Jewish community of
Hungary the third commu-
nity in a Communist coun-
try to become a full member
of the WJC.
The other two are the
Jewish communities of
Romania and Yugoslavia.
Until now, representa-
tives of the Hungarian
Jewish community, like
those of Czechoslovakia, Po-
land and East Germany,
attended WJC meetings as
observers.
He who cries over the past
is offering a vain prayer.
