Western Nations Spur M.E. Arms Race LONDON (JTA) — Brit- ain, France and the U.S. are stepping up their arms supplies to the Middle East and, in the past 12 months, secured at least 34 major arms contracts compared with only four by the Soviet Union. This is revealed by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in its annual "Military Balance" published Sept. 18. Although the number of s do not necessarily re- t the quantities of weapons delivered, they underline the continued fit demand of Middle East states, especially the oil- producing countries, for sophisticated Western weaponry and the readiness of Western states to supply them in growing quantities. The two superpowers are still supplying their princi- pal clients. Thus the U.S. signed major deals with Is- rael, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, and the Soviet Union pledged new supplies to Algeria, Iraq, Syria and North Yemen. But there were sig- Hadassah President a Longtime Zionist By DAVID FRIEDMAN NEW YORK (JTA) — Frieda Lewis, who last month became the 17th president of Hadassah, has been an active member in the women's Zionist organ- ization for 32 years. "It was inconceivable that - I would not be a member of a Zionist organization," she told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in an interview in her office at Hadassah's headquarters. She noted that her father was a be- liever in the messianic re- demption of the Jewish people and her mother had been a member of Hadas- sah. They gave her a thorough Hebrew educa- tion. "I always felt a close spiritual bond with Israel and later translated this into practical terms," she said. Mrs. Lewis said that a recent study of Hadassah members and potential members under 40 found that these younger women also put support of Israel high on their list of reasons for joining Hadassah. "These young people don't have the memory ... the personal connection with the Holocaust," she said. She - said this makes it more remarkable that they have the same feelings about Israel. Mrs. Lewis heads an organization that with 370,000 members in 1,550 chapters in the United States is the largest Zionist organization in the world and the largest women's volunteer group in the United States. One-third of the member- ship are life members. There are also some 10,000 nen enrolled as Hadassah Associates. More than half of Hadassah's members are daughters or daughters-in- law of Hadassah members. The poll Hadassah took recently of members under 40 found that 40 percent live in the suburbs, three- quarters are affiliated with synagogues and 60 percent have visited Israel. The survey also questioned potential Hadassah mem- bers and found they were mostly younger working women who lived in the 1 cities. r Friday, October 10, 1900 19 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS She said these women join Hadassah to help Is- rael, to develop Jewish identity and to seek per- sonal fulfillment. Mrs. Lewis said that in a time when volunteerism is criticized by some, "I found it most encouraging that the survey shows what I suspected from my own knowledge, that most women do not consider being complete unless they give of themselves without material recompense to a cause they consider sig- nificant." Mrs. Lewis has several goals for her presidency. One is to provide "opportu- nity for leadership wher- ever possible to younger women who seek it and are equipped," she said. An- other is to involve Hadassah in activities in all parts of the U.S. Mrs. Lewis said-she wants Hadassah to "find ways to maintain its 'role as a pioneer in Israel. I want to increase the knowledge" of the health facilities Hadas- sah maintains in Israel as well as Israel's other needs so that "the vast Hadassah membership will maintain its connection to the land and people of Israel." In addition, Mrs. Lewis pledges that "Hadassah will use its influence to combat anti-Israel and anti-Semitic forces and will make its voice heard on these issues in the "highest offices of the land." Mrs. Lewis has named her predecessor, Bernice Tannenbaum, who served the maximum four one-year terms as president, as chairman of the Hadassah Medical Organization. Jewish Cultists NEW YORK (ZINS) — In their new book on cults, "Prison or Paradise," authors James and Marcia Rudin say that 20-50 per- cent of all cult members are Jews. The Rudins say a possible explanation for the high percentage of Jews is that many Jews attend colleges, where cults are active. They say most cult mem- bers are middle class, idealistic, socially mobile and often rebelling against parental authority. nificant variations. Iraq, which previously drew many of its arms from the USSR, has now turned to France, which concluded no fewer than seven agreements with it, for Mirage fighters, helicop- ters, and anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles. Italy also emerged as a supplier to Iraq's navy, agreeing to sell her four frigates, six 650-ton cor- vettes and a support ves- sel. The Soviet Union agreed to supply the Iraqis with 40 trainer aircraft and un- known quantities of MiG 23s, MiG 25s and MiG 27 fighters. Libya, whose armory al-. ready included 2,400 Soviet tanks, also turned to the West in the past year: Spain agreed to sell her three submarines; Canada, light aircraft; France, anti- aircraft missiles; Italy, ar- mored cars; and The Netherlands, one transport aircraft. Kuwait, traditionally supplied by the West, moved in the opposite direc- tion and bought ground and air missiles from the Soviet Union. Britain is selling 287 Shir tanks to Jordan, while Saudi Arabia has contracted to buy AMX infantry combat vehicles and anti-aircraft systems from France. Among Middle East states, Syria is spending the highest proportion of its government's defense budget, a massive 55 per- cent. Syria is followed by Is- rael, with 32 percent, and Saudi Arabia with 28 per- cent. In terms of actual defense spending, oil-rich Saudi Arabia is way out in front with a colossal $20 billion, compared with Israel's $5.2 billion and Syria's $4 bil- lion.
