Shapiro, the first Jewish president of the University - of Michigan. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m., dinner is at 7 p.m. In tribute to Dr. Shapiro, a forest of 25,000 trees will be established in the the American Bicentennial Park, in Israel, and will be known as the Dr. Harold T. and Vivian B. Shapiro For- est. A native of Israel, Kedar joined the British Royal Air Force. After pilot training with the U.S. Navy in Pensacola, Fla., he served with the Royal Air Force in Euro- pean and Far Eastern theaters of war. In 1946, he left the Royal Air Force and was active in the Irgun Zvai Le'umi in Europe. With the creation of the state of Israel, Kedar re- turned to Israel and joined the newly established Is- raeli Air Force. Among his assignments as an officer, Kedar also served as mili- tary attache in Paris and Turkey. In 1965, he left the Israeli Air Force with the rank of full colonel and joined government service. In 1970, he was appointed head of the Israel defense mission in Europe. In 1973, he returned to Israel and helped found Beth Hatefut- zot— Museum of the Jewish Diaspora — in Tel Aviv, where he served as chief curator until his recent ap- pointment as consul general of Israel in New York.
