p.m. Nov. 2 will be Rabbi
Hayim H. Donin, for 20
years the rabbi of Cong.
Bnai David in Southfield.
He helped found and direct
Akiva Hebrew Day School
and served as its president.
Rabbi Donin has just
written a new book, "To
Pray as a Jew," which is the
third in a trilogy. It provides
a detailed guide — the first
of its kind in English — to
Jewish prayer. (See review,
Page 4). His talk for Book
Fair is entitled "Why
Pray?"

At 2 p.m. Nov. 2, the
Yiddish Committee of the
Jewish Community Cen-
ter of Metropolitan De-
troit will co-sponsor the
appearance of Judith
Laikin Elkin, author of
"Jews of the Latin
American Republics."
Mrs. Elkin will speak in
Yiddish on "The Pros-
pect for Latin American

can Diaspora as a separate
branch of world Jewry.
Mrs. Elkin is the daugh-
ter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Benjamin Laikin, who were
for three decades active in
the Detroit Jewish commu-
nity.
Mrs. Elkin is adjunct pro-
fessor of history and. politi-
cal science at Albion Col-
lege.
Israel's leading poet to
be published in the
United States, Yehuda
Amichai, was born in
Wurzburg, Germany and
emigrated with his par-
ents to Palestine in 1936.
He served in the British
army in World War II and,
afterward, in the Palmach
(commando units) of the
Hagana underground. He
also saw active service in
the Israeli War of Indepen-
dence and the Sinai Cam-
paign.
Amichai teaches litera-
ture and creative writing at
the Hebrew University and
Grinsberg Teachers College
in Jerusalem. His newest
collection of poems is titled
"Amen."
Amichai will appear at
Book Fair 3 p.m. Nov. 2. He
will speak in Hebrew on
"Hebrew Poetry." His ap-
pearance is co-sponsored by
the Hebrew Department of
the Jewish Coriimunity
Center.
Avery Corman, author
of "The Old Neighbor-
hood," will speak at 8

by the Men's Clubs of the
Temples and Synagogues
of Metropolitan Detroit.
He will speak on "His
Neighborhood."
"The Old Neighborhood"
is the story of Steven Rob-
bins who has achieved ev-
erything he thought he
wanted, but none of it has
turned out to be what he
thought it would be.
Corman wrote the
screenplays for "Oh, God!"
and "Kramer vs. Kramer."
At 10 a.m. Nov. 3, Fran-
cine Klagsbrun, author of
"Voices of Wisdom —
Jewish Ideals and Ethics
for Everyday Living,"
will speak on "Old Wine
in New Bottles: Jewish
Values."
"Voices of Wisdom" is an
anthology of the Jewish
tradition, organized to ad-
dress the worries, problems,
and controversies of life to-
day. The book deals with
Jewish viewpoints,
guidelines, and arguments,
both ancient and modern,
on every major contempor-
ary issue: abortion and
birth control, the environ-
ment, civil disobedience,
business ethics, the position
of women, divorce, gossip,
choosing public officials,
test-tube babies, and many,
many other concerns.
Francine Klagsbrun has
written or edited 17 books
for both adults and young
people. She is a member of
the Publication Committee
of the Jewish Publication
Society and the Board of
Governors of the Melton Re-
search Center for Jewish
Education.
Gloria Goldreich will
speak at 1 p.m. Nov. 3.
Her newest book, "Four
Days," is a novel in which
a woman confronts a
fateful choice about her
future.
The title of her Book Fair
talk is "Our Literary Heri-
tage."
Gloria Goldreich, while a
student at Brandeis, was a
winner of the Seventeen
Magazine short story con-
test. Her short stories, arti-
cles, and critical essays
have appeared in many pub-
lications.
She is the author of a
series of children's books
and the novel "Leah's Jour-
ney."
Tile Book Fair speaker
at g p.m. Nov. 3 will be
Jack Eisner. His appear-
ance will be co-
sponsored by Sholem
Aleichem Institute, De-
partment of Michigan
and Ladies Auxiliary of
the Jewish War Veterans,
and Shaarit Haplaytah.
Eisner is the author of
"The Survivor," and his talk
for the evening is entitled
"The Generation Gap and
the Holocaust."
"The Survivor" is Eisner's
