That sounds like a great deal, and much is written about the settlements. But only after reading the ac- companying statistics and doing some calculating can the reader understand that the settlements make up less than eight percent of the Israeli-controlled land on the West Bank. The writers do not explain what is done with the other 90- plus percent. Actually, much of the land is used by Israel's mili- tary for security zones, bases, and outposts — per- fectly legal under interna- tional law. Nor do The Post's correspondents ex- plain that much of the land controlled by Israel is gov- ernmental land transferred from one sovereign to an- other. No mention is made of the fact that many of the Israeli settlements are MOVIE GUIDE BERKLEY THEATRE built on the sites of former Jordanian army camps or Jewish settle- ments which were over- run by Arab armies in 1948. On the front page, the writers accuse Israel of tak- ing "nearly one-third" of the region. Only in the last paragraph of accompanying statistics is the true figure given: "about 27 percent."
