anxiety about their safety
following a spate of anti-

here have removed the

Sexist Terms in Bible

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.)

Sexist language in the
Bible and prayer of all de-
nominations must be elimi-
nated if women are to
achieve religious equality,
according to the interreli-
gious affairs coordinator for
the American Reform
movement.
The proposal was made at
a recent meeting of the
American Psychological
Association in Montreal by
Annette Daum of New
York, coordinator for the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations (UAHC).
She proposed a "multi-
denominational approach to
reverse the damaging ef-

women of centuries of Ian-
gauge that misrepresents
women and misleads us as
to the very nature of God."
Despite progress toward
equality of the sexes in reli-
gion, Ms. Daum told the
psychologists, "sexist lan-
guage remains a major
problem, particularly in
seminary training pro-
grams." She said women
seminarians find them-
selves in a "men's club at-
mosphere, studying a body
of literature which is male-
oriented, taught by men,
mostly about men, inter-
preted and translated by
men in language that oozes
with masculine metaphor."
She reported that many
Reform congregations
now use a glossary of
substitute terminology
to help them replace
masculine words and
phrases used in the Re-
form liturgy. She gave
some examples. For the
masculine term "Lord,"
substitutes are God,
Blessed One, Divine, Re-
deemer, Ruler, Protector.
For the masculine term
"Father," substitutions are
Holy One, Most High,
Exalted. For "Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob," substitu-
tions are: Sarah, Rebecca,
Leah and Rachel, ancestors,
forebears, patriarchs and
matriarchs.
