of strolling Gino D'Alessio,
whose sound track of "The
Godfather" you may have
heard in that movie . . .
Gino was also in the wed-
ding scene . . . He is no
stranger to Hollywood,
playing and appearing in
other movies . . . like
"Three Coins In The Foun-
tain."
At the Benchmark, Gino
is a great favorite . . . his
quiet yet strong touch has
no limit . . . Nadine the song
and Gino will play it for you
or your table.
Gino played as Evelyn
brought our dinner . . .
spinach salad . . . stir-fried
vegetables . . . and Mignon
of Veal Aux Morilles (veal
sauteed in butter and top-
ped with a creamy sauce of
Morel mushrooms.)
Jean Markowitz in our
party couldn't eat all her
sauteed shrimp . . . They
were placed in a so-called
"doggie" package . . .
wrapped up in not just
plain tin foil . . . but
shaped like the ice carv-
ing of a swan . . . a true
elegant touch.
The flaming dessert pre-
pared by Mark was his own
togetherness . . . Ice cream
topped with strawberries
and bananas . . . flambe'd
in brown sugar, cinammon,
Creme of Banana, Rum,
Creme De Noyaux, and
Grand Marnier . . . then
more ice cream . . . and
topped with a dash of whip-
ped cream.
Ramy and his Benchmark
kitchen staff make their
own pastries, sauces and
breads . . . Some of the rolls
are from Martin Weiss at
Modern Bakery.
The Benchmark decor has
few equals . . . with its soft
brown tones and beautiful
scenery . . . overlooking
Michigan Inn's outdoor

Executive chef Ramy
Berdy loves his work so
much that he is there
from early morning until
8:30 every evening . . .
"It's almost like having a
license to play," says
Ramy.
The Benchmark is seeing
an almost complete turnab-
out . . . except for the not
inexpensive a la carte
prices.
When was theTagt -time
you went there for lunch or
dinner and had free valet
parking? . . . The snob ap-
peal has gone . . . and in its
stead are smiles . . . polite-
ness with concern . . . ev-
erything necessary for the
utmost enhancement of
gracious dining.
Yes, there is a change at
Michigan Inn's Benchmark
Restaurant . . . so very
much for the better.
AFTER 29 YEARS,
Julius Pollack will retire as
head of Vienna Wholesale
Products . . . It will be
taken over in November by
Marty Cook and Hy Roths-
tein . . . Marty is Julius'
sales manager and Hy his
office manager.
THE FENBY-CARR
Orchestra is still as great as
ever . . . Gene Fenby, piano
and trombone; Milt Ap-
tekar, trumpet and
clavietta; Mauri Lax, sax,
clarinet, flute, violin and
clavietta; Dave Jones, bass;
and Joe Chila, drums . . .
Dave took the place of Art
Wilson, who retired six
years ago after 38 years on
the bass, and passed away a
month ago.
Mauri, Gene, Milt and
Art were together in the De-
troit Schoolmen's Chorus 40
years ago when all started
teaching in the Detroit Pub-
lic School system . . . Gene
was its accompanist . . .
Belinda Blanchard, Gene's
wife, is also a school de-
partment head, and has
sung with the band 15
years.
The group is easily one of
the top musical aggrega-
tions for many miles around
. . . Their ability to play
every type of rhythm with
delightful grace is a pleas-
urable asset that many
people enjoy . . . Their
musical talents are un-
limited.
KING LIM'S moved its
Oriental restaurant into the
new Lincoln Center locale
. . . after about 10 years on
W. Nine Mile in Oak Park
. . . and finally had its
grand opening following
four months dedicated to
cleaning the former Big
Boy.
The transformation is a
major one . . . absolutely
no recognition whatsoever
to the former eatery . . .
with natural hanging
plants, airy and spacious,
walls with mirrors and
beautiful scenery, elegant
chandeliers, etc.
"This is the last time I'll
be having a drink here,"
said Oak Park Public Safety
Director Glen Leonard as he
drank his chablis at the
