Councilwoman's Israel Stance VIDEO PROTECTION SERVICE INC. Jeff Schoenber 352-8878 Alan Gildenberg Editor, The Jewish News: A brief report in a local ' newspaper of my participa- tion in a meeting sponsored by a Detroit area Palesti- nian group has prompted harsh questions and charges about my stand on Israel. The critics have neither inquired what my views are nor have they sought to learn what I said at that meeting. The clear infer- ence is that, because I ap- parently do not agree 100 percent with all of Prime Minister Begin's policies and actions, I am an enemy. This is not only errone- ous, it is dangerous. Many, if not most Israelis, have dif- ferences with their prime minister over such issues as Camp David, the Western settlements, the Golan Heights and work on the Sabbath. I insist on my rights too, to my ow n politi- cal evaluation without being judged on the basis of one scanty, inaccurate and generalized newspaper quote. My whole adult life has been dedicated to a con- ern for human rights and justice for all. I have actively and vigorously opposed racism, anti- Semitism, discrimination and stereotyping of any and all minorities and ethnic groups. My support of Israel dates from the earliest days of the struggle for independence. I believe with passion that all peoples have the right to de- termine their own destiny, to live in peace, to organize their own lives without threat or use of outside force. My feelings toward Israel were warm and deep even before my marriage 30 years ago to my Jewish hus- band and the birth of our Jewish daughter. My hus- band's family, incidentally, was decimated in the Holocaust and a cousin was a heroine of the under- ground, famed for her re- fusal to talk when tortured to death by the Nazis. My admiration for and support of Israel does not preclude my strong belief in _ - —fum / par OZCQ Pau \•• ■■ • LEVINS of WEST BLOOMFIELD INC. Friday, *ember 26, 1980 41 the right of every people to a homeland, to self determi- nation and to freedom — and that includes the Pales- tinian people. My opposi- tion to the unlimited exten- sion of Israeli homesteads in no way represents ac- ceptance, approval or con- doning of terrorism or threats to the existence of the state of Israel. Instead — as do many other friends of Israel here and elsewhere — I regard my respect for the rights of the Palesti- nians as consistent with our basic democratic philos- ophy. In the same fashion, I supported the movement to end the war in Viet- nam. Likewise, I have gone to Chile on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers to ex- press support for the Childean people and thus work against the U.S. pol- icy which covertly helped to overthrow their elected government and supported a fascist re- gime. It is consistent with such actions on the De- troit City Council as my resolution calling for de- velopment of a cur- riculum to teach the hor- rors of the Holocaust in Detroit schools. The Palestinians should have their own homeland. They should be given equal treatment in Israel for jobs, education and services. They, too, are part of the worldwide human race that merits understanding,' compassion and brother- hood. I share the feelings of most Americans in my pro- found and unshakable sym- pathy and support of the people of Israel. But I will not allow that bond to be threatened by those who in- sist that I adopt in toto their specific and narrow defini- tions of loyalty to a cause. I join with the Jewish people in their historic sup- port for human rights throughout the world and for the preservation of the state of Israel.
