NEW YORK (JTA) —
Beth Israel Synagogue of
Derby, Conn., has sent a
Jewish New Year's card to
each of the 52 American
hostages held in Iran.

Acclaim From National, State and Local
Leaders Marks Temple Israel Dedication

With national leaders re-
presenting its parent body,
the Union of American He-
brew Congregations, state
and local representatives
and the two U.S. Senators
as participants, Temple Is-
rael has inaugurated a
four-day series-of events to
mark the dedication of its
new sanctuary located at
5725 Walnut Lake Rd.,
West Bloomfield.
A series of events ar-
ranged for the dedication
includes special children's
as well as adult events,
musical functions and roles
for community representa-
tives.
A sukka as symbol of the
holiday season greets the
members and visitors to the
temple and in the sanctuary
there is the Jonathan Miller
Organ installed as a gift
from Mr. and Mrs. Milton J.
Miller in memory of their
son Jonathan.
A special musical pro-
gram is planned for Nov. 2
as a dedication of the or-
gan's installation.
The first dedication
event will coincide with
Simhat Torah, when
1,000 children are ex,
pected to join in a chil-
dren's dedication serv-
ice, Thursday evening.
A traditional aspect of the
service will be the partici-
pation of the Leslie R.
Schmier family in the pass-

Rabbi Harold S. Loss will
deliver a story sermon, and
reading from the Torah will
be high school students Ste-
ven Grekin and Sandford
Kopnick, president and
religious vice president of
the Temple Youth Group.
Officers of the congre-
gation, presidents of the
Temple's auxiliary
societies and /*embers of
the religious school
board will then lead the
Hakafot (processional)
around the sanctuary
with the Torahs.
The formal service of
dedication is planned for
8:30 p.m. Oct. 3, when Al-
bert Vorspan, vice president
of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, will
be the principal speaker.
Vorspan will speak on "A
Commitment to the Fu=
ture." The Bar Mitzva of
Daniel Scott Lambert, son
of Harold and Ann Lambert,
will be observed.
The rabbis of the congre-
gation, M. Robert Syme,
Harold S. Loss and Leon
Fram, together with Cantor
Harold Orbach, will conduct
the service.
A dedication dinner-
dance will be held 7 p.m.
Oct. 4, in the temple's
Herman Hall. The facility
is being used for the first
time for a congregational
event, and it will be dedi-
cated by Rose Herman
and her family.
It was Mrs. Herman's gift,
in memory of her late hus-
band, John R. Herman, than
sparked the beginning of
the building project. The
$250,000 gift was the
largest single contribution
to the building campaign.
Rabbi Daniel B.. Syme,
son of Rabbi and Mrs. Syme
and presently director of
education for the UAHC,
will offer reminiscences
based on his growing up in
Temple Israel, and Cantor
Orbach will offer a musical
program.
The final dedication
event will be a public recep-
tion 2-5 p.m. Oct. 5. Speak-
ers will be Michigan's two
Senators, Carl Levin and
Donald W. Riegle, Jr.
Representing the

Bloomfield will be John

West Bloomfield Town-
ship; Rev. Leonard
Chrobot, president of St.
Mary's College, Orchard
