Isadore Taishoff
of Daily Forward
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Isadore Taishoff, the Wash-
ington representative of the
Jewish Daily Forward for
almost 50 years, died Sept.
11. He was 89.
Born in Minsk, from
which he fled. in 1908 to
avoid being drafted into the
Czar's army, he came to
Washington that year and
became active in Jewish
Socialist causes and in
organizations seeking to
advance Yiddish culture in
the United States.
He was secretary for
many years of the Work-
men's Circle and was an
officer of the Yiddish-
speaking branch of the
Socialist Party.
He joined the Forward in
1931 and retired in 1977 as
the Forward's Washington
representative in charge of
circulation. -
David H. Levy
David H. Levy, a teacher
at Renaissance High School
in Detroit, died Sept. 8 at
age 52.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Levy previously taught at
Henry Ford High School. He
was a member of Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses, Dr.
Perry Burnstein Post of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars
and the Detroit Federation
of Teachers.
He leaves his mother,
Mrs. Hyman (Cecille) Levy;
and two brothers, Franklin
and Ralph.
We pay tribute to their memory for their
friendship, and for all the good deeds that
marked their active lives.

— Edith Rosenwald Stern, a
leading New Orleans
philanthropist and a lead-
ing campaigner for Israel to
which she contributed funds
throughout her life, died
Sept. 11. She was 85.
The Stern Fund, of which
she was a founder, and
which is based in New York,
distributes as much as
$500,000 a year to encour-
age political action and so-
cial change.
Mrs. Stern was the
daughter of the late Julius
Rosenwald of Chicago, who
helped to finance Sears
Roebuck in its early years.
A leading philan-
thropist, he imbued his
children with such views.
Mrs. Stern's brother,
William Rosenwald, is a
founder of the United
Jewish Appeal.
For more than 50 years
after she first arrived here,
Mrs. Stern supported often
unpopular liberal causes.
With her husband, she was
a founder of the Dillard
University, a predomin-
antly black college in New
Orleans. Her home, Longue
Vue, a 48-room mansion,
which she opened to the
public before her death, is
now a museum.

Sydney A. Jacobs, a
longtime Detroit attorney,
died Sept. 10 at age 85.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Jacobs was director of the
Selective Service Board for
three years during World
War II. He was a World War
I veteran.
Mr. Jacobs was a member
of the Michgian Bar Asso-
ciation, Temple Beth El and
past president of the
Standard Club.
He leaves a sister, Mrs.
Elmer (Lucille) Zuckerman;
nieces and nephews.
