The Cinema Owners Association had threatened to stop buying and showing American films if any were shown on TV. The Knesset passed a bill making that illegal. World Zionist Press Service The Jewish year 5740 was quite a year for filmmaking in Israel. As a result of Is- rael's first participation in the Cairo International Film Festival red carpets rolled out for eight Israeli participants. Only Elizabeth Taylor received more publicity. Eddie Soffer of Jerusalem Capital Studios was there talking of a new Egyptian Israeli co-production, about the Yom Kippur War of 1973, to be produced by a neutral, Martin Pohl ("Lion in Winter") of the USA. The Yom Kippur War is also the subject of another film, starring Dustin Hoffman ("Marathon Man," "Kramer vs. Kramer"), who was signed by Columbia pictures for $3.5 million to star as an Israeli prisoner of war during 1973. A third film was proposed, "The Loving Stranger," which tells the story of a love be- tween an Israeli officer and the fiancee of an Egyptian soldier killed in 1973. Wars, old and new, were popular subject matter for other films. "The Big Red One," a $6 million World War II film, was made entirely in Is- rael, although none of the story takes place here. Stars Lee Marvin and Mark Hamil ("Star Wars"), graced the screen at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in this latest film. Then came "Massada," a $20 million made for T.V., eight-hour mini series, starring Peter Strauss ("Rich Man, Poor Man"), Peter O'Toole and other big names. The making of "Massada" in Israel is a story in itself. About 300 crew members sometimes consumed as many as 750 meals a day. A total of 20 members of the Israel Defense Forces Engineering Corps built a ramp which the "Romans" -used 1907 years ago to at- tack the 960 Jewish Zealots in the fortress. The ramp used 110 tons of steel, and was designed by Yaacov. Yerushalmi, the architect of the Suez bridge canal built in 1973. A village of complete structures and facades was recreated after two months of painstaking reiearch, in consultation with Deputy Prime Minister Yigael Yadin, the original ex- cavator of Massada. It took another two months to com- plete the Northern Palace, where the Zealots took ref- uge, complete with mosaic floors, murals, storeroom and the small synagogue. The Northern Palace, over- looking the Dead Sea, was recreated on a windswept hilltop a mile away from the original Massada. The sleepy desert town of Arad was completely transformed by the film, as its two hotels were booked up for months on end and its center be- came the popular re- .
