It is a sharing unique to our history and characteris- tic of our abiding concern for those in need. Particularly now, when the plight of the poor and the elderly, the strains on Jewish family life and Israel's mounting polit- ical isolation challenge our ability to respond, a unified Detroit Jewish community is vital. Indeed, it is unity that as- sures our survival. If the past year of Federa- tion activity is any example, we have reason to be op- timistic for the future. In a period of economic diffi- culty, when the demands on our agencies were so great, Detroit Jewry responded to the Allied Jewish Cam- paign with unmatched generosity. A major factor in that achievement relates to our unflagging commit- ment to Israel. We made a promise; and we are living up to it. This year, cutting up the communal budgeting pie was especially painful, but our agencies met the chal- lenge. Those that are most concerned with resettle- ment faced the uncertainty of a dwindling immigrant influx. established ru,5 lzrzri sew my nrmrn ai5u, of abundance, peace and prosperity HORDES AGENCY INSURANCE TRAVELERS TOWER 26555 EVERGREEN Suite 515 Southfield MRS. DAVID I. BERRIS i13rErzn mslto GEORGE ZELTZER priorities and pooled their services. It was a magnifi- cent effort by lay leaders and professional alike. If we coped with im- mediate problems, we also bravely looked ahead. Our growing involvement in the multi-faceted needs of the aged was evidenced on sev eral fronts, including dedi- cation of Phase II of Prentis Towers, Jewish Federation Apartments. We embarked upon a use study of the Maple-Drake site adjacent to the Jewish Community Center to assess its poten- tial for added services to senior citizens and others. We also shared a sense of optimism in the involve- ment of young people through the Junior Divi- sion, whose membership rolls are truly impressive. And the leadership pro- vided by Detroiters to the rest of the nation — leader- ship which is being re- plenished through the Young Leadership Cabinet — is indeed heartening. The dynamism for which Detroit is noted will be amply demonstrated (Nov. 12-16,) when our Federa- tion hosts the Council of Jewish Federations Gen- eral Assembly at the De- troit Plaza Hotel. We an- ticipate with great pride this rare opportunity to "show off." All of these instances point to the remarkable strength that resides in the unified Jewish community of Detroit. To those who Editor, The Jewish News I read your article on Theodore Cummings (a prominent Los Angeles supporter of Ronald Re- agan) and enjoyed it. There is one error. Cum- mings is not the first Jewish trustee,of the University of Southern California. He is the second, a fact which he related to me personally and which I already knew. The first Jewish trustee of USC was my brother-in- law, Michael C. Birnkrant, a native Detroiter (deceased in 1966), who still has two brothers living in Detroit and practicing law, Theo- dore and Norman.
