Tal Brody, 36, has dramatically changed the population's attitude toward sport in this small, Middle Eastern country. "When I first came to Is- rael, it was strictly a one- sport place, and that sport was soccer. Today, in 1980, basketball has earned a spot as one of the country's most popular sports. Its players are recognized internation- ally as being among the world's most serious, and other endeavors such as golf, tennis, swimming and even softball have thrived in the changing climate that resulted from basket- ball's successes," Brody be-' lieves. The task Brody set for himself was difficult but never dull. "Ten years ago, playing conditions were primitive. We had a 5,000-seat, open-air stadium. I had to accli- mate to taking a wind fac- tor into account when I shot, not to mention get- ting used to cancellation of games due to rain," the lanky player recalls in the cozy den of his Herzliya home overlook- ing the Mediterranean. "But now our basketball center outside Tel Aviv seats over 10,000. It is plush and sells out regularly. We even have a roof!" Brody began playing bas- ketball in high school in his native city of Trenton, N.J. He starred at the Univer- sity of Illinois, making the Big Ten's all conference team and being chosen sec- ond team All-American. In 1965 he visited Israel for the first time to partici- pate in the Maccabia competition of Jewish athletes from around the world. He liked what he saw so much that he declined the Washington Bullets' second draft bid in order to accept an offer from Tel Aviv's basketball club. "I returned to America in 1968 for two years when I was drafted into the U.S. Army," Brody says, proud of his dual U.S.-Israel citizenship despite the dual respon- sibilities entailed. Brody was back with the Tel Aviv team in 1971 and the long road to victory commenced. The very first year, his expertise guided the club into a "revolution- ary second place" in the Europe-based World Cup games; Israel was under- standably electrified since its team had never before even made the quarter- finals. His proudest moment came in 1977, again at the European Cup competition in Yugoslavia, when out- ranked Israel beat such giants as Spain, Czechos- lovakia and the USSR, then triumphed over Italy in a 78-77 squeaker to claim first place — a feat that set off an hour-long round of car-honking from one end of Israel to the other. WE WISH OUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR SIDNEY & ROSE ROSENBERG & FAMILY Friday, September 12, 1980 81 nzuo ruts TO ALL OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS JOSEPH and ELIZABETH ROTH a MR. and MRS. IZRAEL BESSER SUZANNE and NANCY Wishes Their Family and Friends A Happy & Healthy New Year "When we came hOme after that one, we felt a tre- mendous surge of pride. Over 150,000 people came out to greet us." Equal in significance to the World _Cup success was Brody's receipt in May 1979 of the Israel Prize, his nation's highest civic honor. He was the first athlete ever awarded the distinction. "We didn't only win, we raised the standard of sport in Israel," he says, by way of explanation. Brody officially retired in 1978 and now has more time to enjoy life with his Israeli wife Ronit, and children Karin, 8, and Ron, 5. But he is seldom more than a hook shot away from the beckon- ing backboard. In between operating a growing sports equipment distributorship and think- ing about a future career in pro-ball coaching, Brody seizes every opportunity to visit distant schools, army camps, even prisons, to host basketball clinics and gen- erally raise people's con- sciousnesses about sports. "If I did anything, I helped prove that tenacity pays off. A more serious, professional approach .to athletics is prevalent in Is- rael today. The other teams, not to mention sportsmen in other fields, realized that if my team could excel on the merit of tough, exacting training, then perhaps so could they." Israeli Envoy Hits Holland's Embassy Move AMSTERDAM (JTA) — Eytan Ronn, Israel's am- bassador to the Nether- lands, refused to open an exhibit of Israeli theater and costume designs in Maastricht in the southeast in protest against Holland's decision to move its em- bassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. Instead, Ronn sent the Is- rael embassy's cultural at- tache, Gershom Zohar, to open the exhibition. In his address at the exhibition Zohar emphasized that Jerusalem is the united cap- ital of Israel with freedom for all religions. Ronn's refusal and Zohar's statement were widely reported in the Dutch press.
