Handlemans Receive Humanitarian Award
at Annual Magen David Tribute Dinner

Joseph and Sally Hand-
leman received the distin-
guished humanitarian serv-
ice award of the American
Red Magen David for Israel
Sunday at a dinner-dance in
their honor sponsored by
the Michigan Region of
ARMDI. Mrs. Handleman
was unable to attend the
dinner and was represented
by her granddaughter, De-
bbie Sadoff.
The couple received many
honors throughout the eve-
ning, which served as the
region's annual fund-
raising event.
Congressman James
Blanchard (D-18th District)
presented the couple with a
flag flown over the U.S. cap-
ital. Benjamin Saxe, na-
tional executive vice
president, lauded Handle-
man's role in the leadership
ranks of ARMDI. Cantor
Louis Klein of Cong. Bnai
Moshe sang a musical trib-
ute to the honorees.
An update on Michigan
Region projects was read
by Dr. Morris Starkman,
chairman of the
medical-dental council.
Among the projects
funded by the Michigan
region are: infant rescue
units, training programs
for ambulance drivers,
paramedics training
programs and the MDA
blood center at Tel Aviv
University.
Duane Johnson, director
of the Southeast Michigan
Chapter of the American
Red Cross, brought greet-
ings from the local chapter
and talked about the
American Red Cross' drive
to have Israel's MDA recog-
nized by the International
Red Cross Society.
Guest speaker Philip
Slomovitz was introduced
by Dr. John Mames, chair-
man of the Michigan
Region. Slomovitz praised
Dr. and Mrs. Mames for
their efforts on behalf of
ARMDI.
He spoke of Israel's cur-
rent status on the interna-
tional scene. "Israel is in
great trouble . . . the world
has attempted to isolate us
from mankind.
"We must admit the
difficulties exist and con-
front them." He referred
specifically to Israel's
economic difficulties and
the threat of Soviet-
backed Arabs.
On the topic of yerida —
departure, especially of Is-
raelis from Israel —
Slomovitz said it was a sad
situation and that pointed
to a need for aliya.
Focusing on the coming
U.S. Presidential elections,
Slomovitz asked what will
happen to Israel in relation
to American interests, espe-
cially after Nov. 5.
He said that "the

Being in the company of a
wise man is like going into a
perfumery: you may not
take or buy a thing, but the
sweet scent clings to you
and your clothes for a day.
— Rabbi Nathan

American-Israeli friend-
ship will go on." He added
that as long as there is dedi-
cation to the Jewish ideal
Israel will survive.
We survived the anti-
Semites to rebuild a
Jewish life in Israel."
Following Slomovitz's
talk, the honor roll was read
by Louis Silverfarb, dinner
co-chairman, and Max So-
sin, who delivered anec-
dotes at the dais. William
Davidson, honorary co-
chairman with Paul Zuc-
kerman, paid tribute to the
honorees. Silverfarb pre-
sented Handleman with the
award.
Handleman, national
president of ARMDI, ex-
pressed gratitude to Dr. and
Mrs. Mames, paid tribute to
Slomovitz and praised his
audience as well.
"You have honored your-
selves with the gifts you
have made." He thanked his
audience for participating
in a "noble cause."
Rabbi Efry Spectre of
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
scene of the tribute affair,
presented greetings from
the congregation. Rabbi
Leon Fram, founding
rabbi of Temple Israel,
recited the benediction.
Rabbi Herbert S. Eskin,
who worked on public re-
lations for the dinner,
gave the invocation. Dr.
Norman A. Segal, dinner
co-chairman, was the
toastmaster. Mrs. Harvey
A. Beaver, president of
the women's committee,
read greetings from her
division.
