Family Obligations Precede
Woman's Torah Observance

Two reasons are given for
excusing women from ob-
serving some of the biblical
commandments. It should
be generally understood
that women are excused
from only those positive
commandments whose per-
formance requires a specific
segment of time.
One reason for excusing
them is that these com-
mandments might conflict
with the women's concern
for taking care of her
household and children.
The home and the children
are considered more impor-
tant and more deserving of
attention and indeed more
important than the obser-

to inspire them, as men do.
Thus they are excused from
most time-constrainted pos-
itive commandments. The
exemptions granted to
women are thus a matter of
exalted privilege.

Jewish Survival

Certainly the heroism of
the defenders of every other
creed fades into insignifi-
cance before this martyr
people, who for 13 centuries
confronted all the evils that
the fiercest fanaticism could
devise, enduring obloquy
and spoliation the violation
of the dearest ties and the
infliction of the most hide-
ous sufferings, rather than
abandon their faith.. .
While . . . the intellect of
Christendom, enthralled by
countless superstitions, had
sunk into a deadly torpor in
which all love of enquiry
and all search for truth were
abandoned, the Jews were
still pursuing the path of
knowledge, amassing learn-
ing and stimulating pro-
gress with the same un-
flinching constancy that
they manifested in their
strength.
