explained as symbolizing
either the ascension of man
or his fall.
This is characteristic of
the traditional impression
of Rosh Hashana which is a
day of judgment in which
some rise and others fall.
Others claim that the
ladder shape tells man he
can always climb if only he
wishes to ascend the ladder
of faith, no matter how far
down the ladder he finds
himself.
The halla is dipped in
honey at the Rosh
Hashana meal.
The diet on Rosh
Hashana was designed to
symbolize good tidings in
order to raise the optimism
of humankind on the Day of
Judgment. The honey,
being sweet, then, sym-
bolizes good news and
pleasant occasions during
the year to come like the
sweetness of the honey.
It also teaches the Jew to
face the future with op-
timism and courage instead
of with hopelessness and
desolation.
There are some who
point out that the numer-
ical value of the Hebrew
letters that spell the He-
brew word for honey
(D'vash) is the same as
the numerical value of
the title of the Almighty
as the "Merciful father"
(Av ha-Rachamim).
This, of course, sym-
bolizes to the Jew that the
Day of Judgment would in-
deed be tempered with
mercy by the Almighty, the
merciful father.

Few enterprises of great
labor or hazard would be
undertaken if we had not
the power of magnifying the
advantag we expect from
them.
