This period of introspection, which takes place during the High Holidays, is a time when Jews face questions whose answers form the intricate and complex web called Jewish identify. Yet, unlike a political election, the threads of deci- sion which form the fabric of one's Jewish life are quite varied and different. The thread of God and family, of land and people, of learning and lifestyle, all must be spun on the personal loom. What emerges will be unique: no one's fabric is ever the same. But the ques- tion always remains whether an individual will begin the process. After all, the road ahead is fraught with peril and doubt. - At this hour, the Jewish people stand before twin threats from the outside and the inside. The litany which has been recited for so long soon begins to take on the form of a la- ment: assimilation and anti-Semitism, alienation and mediocrity, indif- ference and inter- marriage. One almost is driven to the point of asking whether the crises facing the Jewish people will ever fade, before we will fade from them. Moreover, why must we continue to face so many challanges? Have we not suffered enough? Living in this universe, with our unique history, we know the tragic truth: there may be no answers, but there are responses. For us, in this era especially, one in MR. and MRS. MOE R. MILLER & FAMILY wish all their family and friends a year filled with health, happiness, joy and peace RABBI BERKOWITZ particular is most essential: Jewish renewal. Indeed, without the "why" of our survival, all the "whats" will be in vain. At this hour, like in days gone by, Jewish survival is dependent on Jewish revi- val. With an inner strength and inner purpose, we can withstand the intense battles that face us on every front during 5741. One thing our long history has taught us: if we are re- newed, then not only will we endure, we will overcome. That renewal, like all great decisions, rests with you. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are unique in the Jewish calendar. Unlike all the other major holidays, they are not linked to the national history of the Jewish people. They focus on the cosmic issues — on Creation and God as creator and ruler of the universe. "To say of the world that it is created is to say that it is not its own ground but proceeds from a will and a plan beyond itself "To say it is not created is to say that the world at every moment is the last word about itself and meas- ured by nothing but itself." — (Hans Jonas) Wishing all our friends and relatives a happy and healthy New Year Wishing all our friends and relatives a happy and healthy New Year
