THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 5, 1980 71 ---- Ehud Avriel, Israel Envoy TEL AVIV (JTA) — Ehud Avriel, the veteran Israeli diplomat and ambassador, died Aug. 26 at age 63. Born in Vienna in 1917, Mr. Avriel came to pre-state Israel in 1939 and was among the founders of Kibutz Neot Mordechai in the north of Israel. Al- though he remained a kibntz member until he di, activities on behalf of --e state carried him around the globe and turned him into a sort of legendary figure. He was the Hagana representative in Istanbul, Turkey, during World War II; he directed the Hagana- sponsored "Bircha" and il- legal immigration move- ment from devastated Europe to Israel; and he was sent to Prague, Czechos- lovakia, to handle- the ac- quisition of arms that saved the Yishuv in the war of in- dependence in 1948. With the establishment of the state of Israel, Mr. Avriel joined the foreign ministry as Israel's first ambassador to Czechos- lovakia and Hungary. He later served as ambas- sador to Romania and to Italy. A close associate of the late David Ben-Gurion, Mr.. Avriel was instrumental in developing the rap- proachement between Is- rael and the newly estab- lished African states. He JACK ASHMAN, 64, 24041 Rensselaer, Oak Park, died Sept. 3. Survived by his wife, Ruth; three sons, Martin I. of Ft. Worth, Tex., Sandy of Pontiac and Dr. Lawrence M.; two brothers, Franklin N. and Herman D.; and six grandchildren. EHUD AVRIEL also served as ambassador in various African states. In the last few years he was no longer a foreign ministry official, but con- tinued to perform special - duties, mainly in Africa, on behalf of Israel. He worked as director general of the Israel Treas- ury under Levi Eshkol and at the ministry for foreign affairs under Golda Meir. From 1968 to 1971, to Mr. Avriel served as president of the Zionist Actions Committee and concurrently as chair- man of the Upper Galilee Development Corp. in Kiryat Shmona. He returned to the foreign office in 1971, when he be- came special adviser to the minister for foreign affairs. He was appointed consul general to the Midwest in 1975. ADL Leader Rosenhaus, 68 NEW YORK (JTA) — Matthew Rosenhaus, an honorary vice chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith and vice president of the ADL Foundation, died Aug. 26 at age 68. A noted civic leader and philanthropist, he was president and chairman of the board of the J.B. Williams Co., Inc., vice chairman of the board and member of the executive committee of Nabisco, Inc., and chairman of the execu- tive committee and a member of the board of Columbia Pictures Indus- tries, Inc. He was a member of the board of governors of the Rutgers Foundation, a trus- tee of Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J., and a trustee of Florida Memorial College in Miami, Fla.
