Carter's New Year Greetings

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
President Carter has issued
his Rosh Hashana message
to the American Jewish
community:
"On the occasion of the
High Holy Days, Rosalynn

and I welcome the opportu-
nity to greet our fellow
Americans of the Jewish
faith.
"The New Year is a time
of self-examination and
moral rededication. The

traditional commitments
you make on Rosh Hashana
and Yom Kippur are an im-
portant contribution to the
strength and vitality of our
nation. The New Year is
also a time to re-affirm
those common, cherished,
ethical principles and val-
ues which form the founda-
tion of our democratic
society.
"We pray with you as
you seek sustenance and
as you set out refreshed
and recommitted to our
common effort to defend
peace and protect the
lives and human rights of
all our fellows on this
globe. We face a formida-
ble task, but as the great
Jewish sages remind us
while we are not required
to complete our task
neither are we free to
shrink from it. Therefore,
let us continue in the pur-
suit of that which is right
for our nation and for
people throughout the
world.
"Rosalynn and I trust you
will find personal renewal
in these holy days and that
your prayers and acts will
advance our shared hopes
for a just and peaceful
world."

MONTREAL — Sexist
language in the Bible and in
prayer must be eliminated
if women are to achieve
religious equality, the
American Psychological
Association was told.
Annette Daum of New
York, interr-sligious affairs
coordinator fthe Union of
American Hebrew Congre-
gations, called for a "mul-
tidenominational approach
to reverse the damaging af-
fects on both men and
women of centuries of lan-
guage that misrepresents
women and misleads us as
to the very nature of God."
The UAHC is the congre-
gational arm of Reform
Judaism in the United
States and Canada.
Despite progress
toward equality of the
sexes in the religious
sphere, Ms. Daum said,
"Sexist language remains
a major problem, particu-
larly in seminary training
programs." She said
women seminarians find
themselves in "a men's
club atmosphere study-
ing a body of literature
which is male-oriented,
taught by men, mostly
about men, interpreted
and translated by men in
language that oozes with
masculine metaphor."
Ms. Daum said many Re-
form synagogues were now
using a glossary of substi-
tute terminology to help
them replace masculine
words and phrases used in
the liturgy.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
President Yitzhak Navon
sent a message to Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat
Monday accepting his invi-
tation to visit Egypt. The
president did not ask to ap-
pear before the Egyptian
Parliament as a return ges-
ture to President Sadat's
appearance before the
Knesset three years ago.
The visit will probably take
place next month. .
Navon received Egypt's
ambassador to Israel, Saad
Mortada Monday, and gave
him a copy of the message,
whose original was sent
through the Israeli Em-
bassy in Cairo.
Coming out of the
president's residence, Mor-
tada said the visit was
likely to contribute to the
improvement of the atmos-
phere between the two
countries. Mortada also said
he hoped a summit between
Sadat and Begin would take
place soon, adding in He-
brew "Im irtze hashem"
(God willing).
