Public relations people
can take a lesson from Ron
and Deborah Spinner —
they know how to promote a
cause calmly, without a lot
of rah-rah hype.
The former Detroiters, in
their mid-20s, are in town
for seven weeks, working
and visiting relatives and
friends, while at the same
time encouraging other
Jews to make their homes in
Israel.
Married in Detroit, the
Spinners moved to Israel
three years ago. Ron is a
graduate student at the
Technion, where he is
majoring in architecture.
Deborah is a graphic artist
for Technion publications.
They reside in -Haifa.
Both admitted that
their Hebrew and reli-
gious training here was
nominal, but after their
arrival in Israel they
boosted their knowledge

of Hebrew at a Hebrew
University ulpan. When
they knew the language
well enough, they
attended at Yeshivat
Hamivtar, a traditional
yeshiva, especially for
university students. They
said most of the students
were Americans.
With little Hebrew back-
ground and only slight reli-
gious affiliation, why did
they take such a dramatic
step?
"It was a dream we had,"
Deborah said. "Now when
we're young it's a nice time
to try to live in Israel."
She added that by coming
to Israel as young profes-
sionals, they wanted to
show "that you can make it
there in a profession."
• She said that American
Jews have a religious
commitment. "It is a
mitzva for every Jew to
live in Israel."
The daughter of Beverly
Weingarden of Southfield,
Deborah designs
catalogues, brochures and
invitations as well as writ-
ing for the Technion maga-
zine. She also does free-
lance artwork, especially
the artwork and lettering
for ketubot, which are im-
pressive.
Ron is a full-time student,
but works part-time in ar-
chitectural design. He has
designed a proposal for a
solar house and a school for
the handicapped. He is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Edward
Rosenbaum of Southfield.
The Spinners will be in
Detroit until Sept. 21 and
will speak to groups or
individuals who would
like information on mak-
ing aliya. They can be
reached at 354-1655.
"It's important for Ameri-
can Jews to be in Israel,"
Mrs. Spinner said. "Ameri-
can Jews have a lot to offer;
we want them to join us."
