overcome by Guarnieri's
playing . . . He arranged a
Toronto date for Guar-
nieri at Bourbon Street.
Jim Taylor of the Detroit
Hot Jazz Society learned of
this through Bob Seeley and
at his urging hired Guar-
nieri for a concert at the Le-
land House Hotel . . . fol-
lowed the next day by a re-
cording session which pro-
duced the hit album
"Johnny Guarnieri plays
Harry Warren" .. .
Since then Guarnieri has
been an annual visitor to
the Detroit area under the
sponsorship of Jim Taylor
and the Detroit Hot Jazz
Society . . . There have been
four albums recorded, all on
the Jim Taylor Presents
label.
Since the first appear-
ance in Detroit, there
have been two tours of
Europe, one in the com-
pany of premier Detroit
pianist Pat Flowers (at
Darlin' Lilly's now) in a
program entitled, "A Sa-
lute to Fats" ... He has
also recently appeared in
the Newport-New York
Festival.
His concerto for piano-has
recently been performed by
a symphony orchestra in
California and he is now
producing a concerto for vio-
lin which seems in keeping
since Johnny is a descen-
dant of the Guarnierus fam-
ily of violin makers .. .
Working with Johnny at
Top of the Pontch, McCrary
on bass has recently been
appearing with Dave Wil-
born and his Little Cotton
Pickers, and was with Louis
Jordan and The Tympany

THE 'FITNESS FIRSTS MENU WAS CONCEIVED BY HILTON HOTELS
CORPORATION AND CASTLE AND COOKE FOODS.
Five . . . Borders on drums
has been seen with Percy
Gabriel's New Orleans Jazz
Band and has worked with
the Jimmie Lunceford Band
among others.
SAXONY is at Michigan
Inn's Dewey's through Sept.
13 . . . followed by La
Strada.
A LOT OF PEOPLE can
be thanked for the fine sup-
port they gave to the Jerry
Lewis Muscular Dystrophy
campaign . . . Like those
who frequented the Bread
Basket at Lincoln Center
. . . where Sanka cans were
on all the tables . . . For each
of the 2,156 coupons drop-
ped in, owners Ron Forman
and Bennett Terebelo con-
tributed 4c (that's $86.24)
. . . while Sanka gave an-
other cent ($21.56) . . . Cus-
tomer cash contributions
came to $187.38 . Total
rounded out by Ron and
Bennett was a nice $300 by
Bread Basket's customers.
GOOD WAITRESS
Tamara
DEPT. . . .
"Tammy" Disser at Sassy's
in Holiday Inn of Southfield
on Telegraph Rd. . . . and
Barbara Parrish at Topin-
ka's Country House on
Seven Mile and Telegraph
. . . Both with wonderful
smiles . . . very efficient and
extremely courteous . .
They make the good food at
their locales taste even bet-
ter.
SPEAKING OF Topin-
ka's Country House, it is
one of the only real class
places left around . . . and
the only one that brings
fresh water — even if you
haven't yet had a sip of
yours . . . Topinka's Coun-
try House has its own laun-
dry, with women doing
nothing but washing linens
. . . That's why so many
cloth napkins are given to
customers . . . and tablec-
loths always are changed
. . . How many places do you
know that give you a finger
bowl nowadays, regardless
of what you've eaten.
LOULA PAPPAS is
only 15-years-old, but the
daughter of co-owner Frank
Pappas at Rialto on Wood-
ward and Nine Mile is the
apple of Uncle Charlie's
eye . . . She takes cash,
washes dishes, does every-
thing asked of her . . . and is
an all-A student as well.
CAN PAT CAMPBELL
and youngsters Sue, Jimmy
and Billy celebrate the first
anniversary of their Darlin'
Lilly's on Orchard Lake Rd.
without letting the em-
ployees in on the fun? .. .
Not on your life! . . . And so
its private party was ca-
tered by Roman Terrace .. .
and help came from there
plus Hamilton Place among
other spots .. .
But even though they
were supposed to just have a
good time along with the
guests, some of the wonder-
ful employees couldn't sit by
without helping out . . . It
was a big thrill for everyone
involved.
