Guarnieri, who jazz writer Leonard Feather called "a one-man history of jazz piano," will perform Tuesdays through Satur- days for two weeks at the skyline restaurant atop the Hotel Pontchartrain . . . Shows begin at 8 p.m. Tues- day through Thursday and 8:30 Friday and Saturday. Guarnieri's specialty, mellow songs designed for dancing during the big band era, are the perfect accom- paniment for the new gen- eration that's discovering slow dancing . . . Joining him will be Everett McCrary on bass and drummer Babe Borders. Following his years with the big bands, Guarnieri worked with smaller groups, cutting dozens of records and re- cording more than 100 radio programs known as "The Manhattan Nighthawks featuring Johnny Guarnieri" . . . Featured in his records were Detroiter J.C. Heard, Slam Stewart and Tony Mottola ... Vocalist June Christy sang in some of the radio pro- grams. For the past several years, Guarnieri has played in a North Hollywood, Calif., nightspot . . . He has toured Europe twice .. . once in a salute to Fats Wal- ler . . . and plays occasion- ally in Toronto as well as Detroit. One of Guarnieri's trademarks is his inclina- tion to slip into unusual meters on traditional songs. -`His obsession with the 5/4 meter is fascinating," Leonard Feather said .. . "The average listener may not understand what is going on when he hears `Lover' or a blues played with that extra beat to the bar, but he certainly will sense that something different and provocative is happening." Also notable is the lightn- ing flight of Guarnieri's small hands over the keyboard. "Watching his hands race through 'Carolina Shout,' you wonder whether the camera has yet been invented that can take an unblurred action shot of Guarnieri's left hand at this tempo," Feather added. Add to his style and speed a seemingly endless reper- toire of standards and Guarnieri will probably be able to spend his two weeks at Top of the Pontch without ever playing the same song the same way twice. Two new Johnny Guar- nieri albums on the Jim Taylor Presents label .. . "Johnny Guarnieri, Keep On Dreaming" solo ballads Originals" . . . half solo and half trio with J.C. Heard, drums, and Major Holley, bass . . . $7 each postpaid or $13 postpaid for both . . . (Jim heads the Detroit Hot Jazz Society . . . 12311 Gratiot Ave., Detroit 48205, 521-3555). HERE'S JOHNNY GUARNIERI . . . born in New York City, March 23, 1917 . . . Played piano from 1927 studying classical music at first . . . Started in the dance band business in 1937 with the George Hall Orchestra of Taft Hotel fame .. . Greatly admired for his work with Benny Goodman, 1939-1940 and Artie Shaw, 1940 to 1941 . . . Was first jazz man to play jazz solo on harpsichord with the Artie Shaw Gramercy Five . . Later worked with Jimmy Dorsey, Raymond'Scott and Cozy Cole and during the 1940s was the most re- corded pianist in the world making hundreds of sides with nearly every imagina- ble group .. . Recorded over 100 radio shows as Johnny Guarnieri and the Manhattan Night- hawks . . . For the past sev- eral years has been playing at the Tail 0' The Cock in North Hollywood .. . Was seen there by clarinetist Henry Cuesta, now the 'hot' man in the reed section of the Lawr- ence Welk Orchestra .. . Henry toured for several years with Jack Teagar- den and immediately was (Continued on Page 36) HUNGARIAN CUISINE "for the discerning diner . . ."
